A moment later, she started to wrench herself out of his grip pushing and kicking. Her scream turned into a high-pitched screech as she clenched her chest, clawing at it again. The venom had reached her heart, slowly freezing it in place. Silas listened as her heartbeat started to slow. As if Amon had found his courage again, he settled next to her and leaned closer.

Running his fingers through her hair, he started whispering to her, “The venom is stopping your heart and I know it feels like you will die if it does, but you won’t. Our venom will keep you alive. Don’t fear it. Welcome it with open arms, just like we will welcome you when you step out of the fires of hell.”

Though her struggle didn’t seem to lessen, his words seemed to help him, and they certainly helped Silas. As Gwen’s heartbeat slowly faded her body shook more and more. She tried to fight it, tried to hold on to dear life, simply because that was a natural instinct.

After the echo of her last heartbeat disappeared, her body stiffened, her screams faded as her body died and reformed into the essence of a vampire. The bitemarks faded, her body cooled down, and her skin paled.

There was no longer blood rushing through her veins or air whooshing through her lungs. She laid quiet in his arms. If he hadn’t known better, he would’ve thought she was dead. Silas’s eyes flickered between Rayen and Amon as panic settled in. By now she should’ve opened her eyes or at least her fangs should have descended.

“Give her time. Everyone is different,” Amon tried to reassure him, but Silas could see his angst.

Rayen disappeared for a mere second to fetch the blood and was now taking her hand in his. “We are right here, little bird. Just follow our voices, follow our touch.”

As if his words had awoken her from a deep sleep, her eyes shot open and her fangs descended, scraping her lip. Her now burning red eyes looked around, her thirst so visible that it slightly scared Silas. She was no longer their little bird. She now shared their strength and he prepared himself to pin her down to stop her from following her instincts to the mainland.

Before Rayen could hand her the glass of blood, she gripped Amon’s hair and launched her fangs into his shoulder. His eyes widened in surprise as she started feeding on him.

Not even a moment later, she started growling in frustration, sucking harder on his flesh. Silas was reminded of how frustrated he’d been when he’d tried to feed on the vampire in the cage for the very first time. She would turn furious in just a few moments if they didn’t help her figure out that she needed the blood in Rayen’s hands.

Silas leaned closer and gently tugged on her. “Come here Gwen, Rayen has the blood you need.”

Her chest vibrated as a deep dark growl escaped her chest.

“She’s not herself. She won’t understand,” Amon quickly chimed in, his voice slightly weakening as Gwendoline drained him.

Silas understood in an instant. He grabbed Gwen’s throat and held her arms behind her back. He was so fast she didn’t even know what was happening. He freed Amon, yanking Gwen backwards and holding her head back. Rayen quickly held the blood over her mouth and poured it down her throat.

Amon rushed to grab more blood and let it run into her mouth as soon as Rayen’s cup was empty. At first, she fought them. She swallowed every drop, but her instincts needed her fangs to sink into something. Silas held her tight, her arms behind her back while he tilted her head back by her throat.

With each drop she calmed, and her eyes finally fading to blue again. When she was no longer fighting his grip, he lessened it, and she reached around to grab the cup Rayen was holding above her mouth. She gulped it down and quickly took the next one out of Amon’s hand.

“Good girl.” Amon praised her, instantly turning her eyes red again.

Rayen chuckled and gently caressed her cheek while handing her another glass. “Better not tease her like that. At least not for now.”

She opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something in return, but no sound came out.

Amon quickly explained, “When you want to talk, you need to breathe. You don’t need the air to survive so your body won’t breathe automatically. You need to take conscious breaths.”

She closed her eyes, inhaled deeply, and then let the air flow out again. “Okay.” Her voice sounded raspy, unlike her usual self.

Silas kissed her cheek and smiled, over the moon to have her back. “You will get used to it very soon.”

She nodded and her eyes flickered to the empty blood bags laying over the bed.

“I’ll grab you some more.” Rayen quickly got up and disappeared.

Gwen nodded and leaned back against Silas.

He eagerly wrapped his arms around her and tugged her closer. “You did it.”

She nodded and reached for Amon’s shoulder. With another deep breath she said, “I hurt you.”

“If you lick his shoulder, you should be able to heal his wounds without leaving a scar,” Silas explained, wanting to ease her guilt.

Without leaning away from Silas, she pulled Amon closer and placed her lips over his torn shoulder. Amon gently massaged her scalp as she sucked his blood and licked his wound. Leaning back, she ran her tongue over her lips, not wasting one drop.

“You still taste good,” she whispered, still trying to figure out the ‘speaking but not needing to breathe’ thing.
