“They don’t look like brothers.”

“I know, but maybe there are only half siblings.”

“Could be. Have you met the third one too?”

“Yes, but I don’t think he is very active.”

“I think two is more than enough to handle,” she said as she took a bite of her lunch. “I forgot to say yesterday I didn’t mean to intrude when I came in here to return your key. I just wasn’t sure if I would leave before you and didn’t want you looking for it.”

“Don’t worry about it. I didn’t even see it as an intrusion.”

Gwen was starting to like Claudia more and more. They spent the whole break together before Claudia had to return to the front desk.

After the last meeting Gwen rushed to her office and grabbed her bag before walking to Mr. Seavey’s office. As she stepped closer the door opened and Mr. Seavey stepped out. His gaze fell on her for a split second before he looked straight past her and walked to the exit.

Rayen stepped out after him, his lips twitching into a smile as his eyes met hers. “Ms. Moore, are you ready?”

She nodded and walked after him, only for him to open the door. Unlike that morning, they shared an elevator with Mr. Seavey. She felt a little uncomfortable but tried to hide it by keeping a straight face. They silently walked back to the car where Rayen opened the back passenger door for her again before getting into the car himself.

The ride back was just as bad–or even worse–than the elevator ride. By the time they arrived at the Seavey property, she could’ve cut the tension in the air with a spoon. Only once she was back in her little apartment did she dare to take a deep breath.

The evening was quiet, just like all others since moving in, and Gwen slowly got used to the peace that surrounded her. The security of having a home, a job, and money was soothing to her soul. Not only that, but her little talk with Claudia during lunch had been sweet. Rayen’s friendliness only added to the good warm feeling that was settling within her.

The next morning, she knocked on the door and walked in. It seemed like déjà-vu from the days before. Everyone was in the same exact spots.

“Good morning,” she said and walked closer, handing out everyone’s schedules.

“Sit, Gwendoline.”

She did as Rayen asked with Silas’s blue eyes burning holes into her. He leaned against the window frame just like the days before, stiff, barely moving a muscle. He seemed to like black a lot as he was head to toe in it once again. She smiled at him before turning her attention to Mr. Seavey.

“Mr. Seavey, I was wondering if it is possible for me to change my working hours for this Saturday.”

He looked up.

“I was hoping to get the afternoon off and instead work those hours on Sunday.”

“And why is that, Ms. Moore?”

Her heart started racing and the blood started rushing to her cheeks. “My sister will be celebrating her birthday that afternoon and I was hoping to attend.”

He seemed surprised before his face turned neutral again.

Rayen was the one to answer for him. “Gwendoline, I didn’t know you had a sister. Did you know Amon?”

He shook his head.

“Of course, you can go and celebrate with your sister.”

“Thank you,” she said and looked down on the notepad in her lap.

“What time is your first meeting, Gwendoline?” Rayen asked. “Would you mind being at the office a little early? My first appointment seems to be at nine today.”

Out of the corner of her eye she saw Mr. Seavey’s dislike for where this conversation was heading, but he didn’t say anything.

“I don’t mind but I can also just drive myself because my meetings will go longer again than yours.”

“We’ll find something to keep us occupied while waiting for you,” Rayen said amused.
