Page 25 of Unconditional Love

His eyes softened, his smile a mixture of sadness and reassurance as if he wanted to give her strength. “I’m so sorry, Gwendoline.”

“No, I’m sorry for not explaining sooner. If you want the necklace back, I can understand.”

“The necklace was an unconditional gift,” he said in a soft but also stern tone.

“Why keep her alive?”

She jumped as her heart skipped a beat. She quickly turned to Silas’s voice behind her. He was standing by the doorway his arms crossed, covering his chest. As usual he was in all black, wearing tight jeans and an even tighter long-sleeved Under Armor shirt.

“Silas!” Rayen’s tone carried a warning before it softened as he talked to her. “You don’t have to answer that.”

She turned back to the last piece of cake and placed it on the tray. “After the accident, Evangeline was heavily sedated and hooked up to all those machines that were supposed to keep her alive. After the doctors told us there was nothing left of her mind, we wanted to free her from her misery. We said our goodbyes and watched as they turned off every single machine. We held her hand, told her it’s okay to leave, but she never did. She kept breathing, though her mind never returned to us.”

“Are you two twins?” Rayen asked in a hesitant and gentle voice.

Gwen nodded and pushed the tray in the middle of the island. “The cake is really good. Evangeline’s nurse makes the best chocolate cake I ever tried.”

She turned to leave, not wanting to risk talking more about Evangeline and crying in front of the men who paid her. Silas eyes were fixed on her, so intense that goosebumps appeared all over her skin and her neck hair rose.

As she stepped into the entrance, she saw Mr. Seavey walk down the stairs with a wine glass in his hands. She shyly smiled at him, before rushing into the hallway and past the door.

“That was rude. Why did you have to ask such a hurtful question?” she overheard Rayen angrily blurt out as she closed the door behind her.

Sunday morning, she slept in and took her time preparing for the week to come. She listened to music while spreading all her papers in front of her on the floor, sorting everything into piles, for either Mr. Seavey, Rayen, Silas, or herself.

Somewhere around lunchtime, Gwen’s stomach started rumbling. She decided to go grocery shopping and stop for lunch on the way back. She still had trouble realizing that she didn’t have to worry about money and her next meal anymore, and was even a little overwhelmed in the grocery store.

As she was putting the cart back, she scraped her elbow on the wall next to the cart return. It was quite a scratch and she had to apply a tissue to stop the bleeding. Luckily, by the time she got back to the house it had stopped. She parked the car by her door and opened the trunk to grab her bags.

“May I assist?”

She jumped and nearly dropped eggs all over the driveway. As she turned around she saw Silas standing just a few feet away from her. She hadn’t even heard him walk up. His eyes were curiously traveling over her and rested on her elbow.

He titled his head, his eyes wild with emotions, anger and worry were two of them. “You were hurt?”

“Just me being clumsy,” she said and turned back to the trunk to repack the items that she’d dropped.

“You hurt yourself?” His voice was right next to her, his hands reaching for the bags.

“Not on purpose. I can carry that, it’s not that heavy.”

He ignored her and started walking to her door, before stopping and waiting for her to follow with the only bag he’d left her. She quickly unlocked the door and stepped inside, hiding the blush on her cheeks. The floor in front of the couch was still covered in paper stacks with her Surface in the midst of it.

His lips twitched to a sleek smirk as he curiously looked around. He set the bags on the countertop and turned to leave.

“Thank you,” she quickly said.

He walked to the door that led to the main house. “My pleasure.”

After he left, she took a deep breath and noticed a mint smell lingering in the air. It smelled mouthwatering, sweet, but spicy at the same time. Then she realized it was him and quickly stopped breathing in so deep. She had to keep her cool, because this whole ‘starting to like her bosses’ situation needed to stop.

Monday morning came far too soon. She knocked on the door to the office and stepped in. As always, Rayen was sitting in front of the desk, Silas was standing by the window and Amon–she internally shuddered and quickly corrected herself–Mr. Seavey sat behind the desk.

“Good morning,” she said as she walked closer and smiled at each of them.

Rayen smiled at her, already reaching for his schedule. She quickly handed Mr. Seavey his before laying Silas’s schedule on the edge of the desk. Surprisingly he moved closer and took his before retreating into his corner again.

“The weekly schedule still needs work as I’m still waiting on the L.A. office to send me all their happenings for Thursday and Friday. I’ll compile a list of everything and will give it to you to decide which events to attend.”
