Page 37 of Unconditional Love

“Just a tad too big,” she said shyly, looking up at him. “Too many windows to clean.”

“You wouldn’t be cleaning,” Silas chimed in from behind her. His arms were crossed in front of his chest, as always, every muscle in his body stiff.

“Silas is right. Whoever buys this will have staff to maintain it.”

She knew that, which was why she would never want a house this size no matter how much money she had. The view yes, some of the amenities yes, but the size, a hard no.

Rayen tilted his head. “So what do you like about it?”

“The view and library.”

“Ms. Moore is a book lover. Did you hear that, Silas?”

Silas stepped closer leaning against the railing next to his brother. “I’ve never seen you with a book.”

“I don’t own many physical books.”

Rayen chuckled. “Silas is stuck in the old age with his paperbacks and hardcovers.”

“I don’t think that’s a bad thing, they’re just harder to move and carry around.”

Silas seemed to be wanting to say something in return, but Mr. Seavey’s footsteps approached from behind. “We will leave now.”

“So soon?” Rayen seemed surprised.

“Yes.” Mr. Seavey’s voice was hard and even cooler than before, if that was even possible.

It slightly scared her, goosebumps appearing all over her skin, and her neck hairs standing on end. She quickly stood and turned to leave, afraid she would anger him even more.

Rayen and Silas exchanged a look she couldn’t quite read before they both looked at her slightly worried. They didn’t test Mr. Seavey either, hastily walking out after him. The car wasn’t where they’d parked it and the valet took forever to bring it to them. Even though it was a beautiful day out she shivered slightly. Mr. Seavey was impatient and if he’d been able to, he would’ve killed the man who handed him the car keys with his looks alone.

Gwen quickly climbed inside and was already dreading the drive back. No one said anything. She didn’t even know if any of them were breathing. Halfway back, or at least that’s what it felt like, she couldn’t bear the shoes on her feet anymore. Even without standing on them the pain pulled all the way up her legs.

She bent forward and took them off, stretching her feet and rubbing her thumb over her heel. There was definitely at least one blister forming and probably more on her toes.

Rayen leaned closer. “What happened?”

“I should’ve put my foot down and chosen different shoes today.”

“Did you not try them on before you bought them?”

“I did but Katharina insisted they go with the outfit.”

“Ms. Moore, if you knew that this would happen, why are you complaining?”

She needed a second to internalize what Mr. Seavey had just said. Sitting up straight, her shoulders back, head held high, she opened her mouth to retaliate. Gently, a mere touch, Rayen stroked the back of her hand with his. His touch came unexpectedly. She looked at him and saw him shake his head, his eyes soft and apologetic.

She closed her mouth again and leaned back staring out the window. If she hadn’t been so afraid of losing her job, she would’ve given him a piece of her mind. She’d dressed to please him. He’d been the one wanting her to change and look like a high class doll all the time.

He parked the car in front of the house, driver’s side closest to the door. Before anyone else had been able to leave he was already unlocking the front door. She didn’t even bother putting her shoes on. Grabbing her bag, she jumped out of the car, her blood still boiling in anger.

“Gwendoline…” Rayen started but she didn’t let him finish.

“I’m fine.”

With hurting feet she rushed inside and had to force herself to close her door quietly. She quickly changed into something far more comfortable, black tight sports leggings and a t-shirt, paired with some sneakers.

She needed to get away from here, so she grabbed her bag and walked out of the room. As she was crossing the entry hall, she thought she could hear a muffled argument, but she didn’t dare to listen and quickly left the house.
