“Ms. Moore, I’m sure Ms. Ramos has told you why you are here?”

Gwen quickly nodded and watched as he pushed two sets of papers towards her, placing them right in front of her.

He pointed to the larger stack on the left. “This is your work contract. Carefully read through it and return it signed and dated to me on Monday before you start your workday.” He pointed to the right stack of papers. “This is your living arrangement agreement, a non-disclosure agreement, and the contract for the company car.”

Gwen leaned closer and looked at the first paper on the right stack, quickly reading the living arrangement agreement. She was to live on the same property as the Seavey brothers in her own apartment, which was part of her salary. The apartment would come fully furnished but she was allowed to bring her own. Guests were permitted in her own apartment, but had to be announced a day before, no matter how long they stayed.

She couldn’t believe what she was reading, so she reread it a second time. At the end of the document Mr. Seavey had already signed, leaving an empty spot for her to do the same. She looked up and saw Mr. Seavey handing her a pen, which she took and signed her name next to his. He took the paper and revealed the non-disclosure contract beneath it.

The nondisclosure contract was quite simple, everything she discussed with any of the brothers was to be kept private unless told otherwise. Everything she saw within the house or property was to be kept from the public at all times. She signed at the bottom of the contract next to Mr. Seavey’s signature. He again took the contract and revealed a leasing arrangement for the company car.

“Ms. Moore, I take my agency’s image seriously and my personal assistant riding the bus, for a private or business matter is unacceptable.”

She blushed as she realized that he’d seen her at the bus stop. Her face burned up as the redness from her blush spread all over. She was mortified. She quickly nodded and signed the document.

“Thank you, Mr. Seavey.”

She looked up and saw a flicker of emotion on his face, something other than coldness, yet it was gone so fast that she couldn’t read it.

He took the last paper and stacked it on top of the others. “When will you be moving in?”

“Would Sunday work?”

Mr. Seavey nodded. “Ms. Ramos will give you a few more papers to fill out for the payroll.”

“Thank you, Mr. Seavey.”

“Don’t disappoint me, Ms. Moore.”

She took her work contract and stood up. “I won’t, I promise.”

As always, he didn’t seem impressed, nor did his face change. She quickly turned to the door and left the office, heading towards Claudia. Gwen’s hands were shaking as relief spread through her body, all the worries from the past few days seemed to have been lifted off her shoulders. Claudia was waiting for her at the front desk with a curious smile on her face.

“Ms. Moore, these are the last of the papers you’ll have to fill out.” She pointed at a glass door to the right of the desk. “You may sit in there and fill them out in private if you like.”

“Thank you.”

Gwen took the forms and sat down in the small conference room. The papers weren’t anything spectacular, just regular things like bank account, social security number, and to Gwen’s biggest surprise, a form for her health insurance. She filled out all the boxes and requested information before taking a closer look at the work contract. It was very detailed, telling her when to start, and what kind of tasks were expected from her. The list went on for a few pages, so Gwen skipped it and went to the page discussing her salary.

When she looked at the number she gasped for air. At first, she thought she’d misread the numbers but as she reread them over and over, tears of joy filled her eyes. Her new salary was $3,500 a month. Of course, that was before tax, but even after taxes that was way more than she’d ever made before, and on top of that came the apartment she didn’t have to pay rent for, and the car she was allowed to use.

That kind of money would take away all of her worries. Of course, it would still take her a long time to pay off all of the debt she’d accumulated over the past years since her mother’s passing. That kind of money meant that she would be able to pay it all off without having to work three jobs just to keep a roof over her head.

She blinked a few times, trying to stop the tears that threatened to fall. Just as she looked up, Mr. Seavey opened the frosted glass doors and left the office. She looked back down and waited a few minutes, not wanting to walk after him and having to take the same elevator. He seemed like a private man, and sharing an elevator with him seemed like overstepping a very fine line. His demeanor was intimidating, and she could see why his real estate agency was doing so well. He didn’t accept failure and it seemed to make everyone work to their best ability.

Gwen took her papers and returned everything but the work contract to Claudia. “I think this time I didn’t miss anything.”

“No worries,” Claudia chirped and handed her a key. “Let me make you a copy of these and all the other documents you signed. Would you like me to show you to the car before I go to lunch?”

“If you don’t mind, that would be wonderful.”

“Of course not.”

Gwen waited for Claudia to copy everything and grab her handbag before following her to the elevators.

“Mr. Seavey would like me to remind you to use the car at all times. I’m not sure why, but he seemed very eager for you to know that.”

Gwen nodded. “Okay.”
