He didn’t question her further and took the hint that she didn’t want to talk about her family anymore. His questions didn’t bother her but thinking about her mom always made her angry. She’d been selfish going off to those scammers and hadn’t thought of what would happen to her own daughter if she passed.

Silas and Rayen were roaming around the women’s section. Both had chosen a few things, all of which she liked judging by a quick glance.

Rayen held up a blouse. “Don’t you own something like this?”

“I do.”

He put it back on the shelf and added the other clothes in his hands to the shopping cart. Rayen had chosen more comfortable clothes, whereas Silas had chosen a few dresses.

“Should I not try them on first?”

Silas’s face darkened as he took a look at the run-down dressing rooms in the middle of the clothing section. “No, you’re not getting undressed in one of those.”

They followed her to the checkout, where Gwen purposely chose to avoid the self-serve lanes. At the mansion, they all helped her pack away the groceries and watched as she made herself lunch. After lunch, Silas tugged her to the library where he showed her the romance books he’d discovered.

“Have you read them before?”

“No, which one have you started reading already?”

He handed her the one about two high school loves that were brought together for a second chance relationship. “I can read it to you.”

“I would love that.”

She sat on the couch, her body turned to him, her knees to her chest. He started reading, his dark, husky voice filling the room–and her heart. She closed her eyes and immersed herself into the story.

After a while he paused reading. “Do you like it?”

Opening her eyes, she grinned at him. “I do, but with your voice I think you could read an article about investments and Wall Street numbers, and I’d still love it.”

Pride radiated through his face, and he continued reading the book. She had no clue how long he was reading for or what time it was when he paused again. Opening her eyes, she saw Rayen come closer with a glass of orange juice in his hands.

“I thought you might be thirsty.”

“Thank you,” she took the glass and sipped on it.

“Would you like to go out and grab food again or will you have something here?”

“Is it that late already?”

“Close to six.”

“Oh wow, I didn’t even feel the time pass. Can we read some more later?”

Silas seemed pleased. “Of course.”

She stretched her legs and arms and made her way to the kitchen. Rayen followed her and helped her cut the lettuce for her salad while she cooked some chicken strips.

“Will you tell me how old you are?”

“Around 300 years.”

She froze for a second, turned, and looked him up and down. “So, you’re telling me I could be dating my great-great-great-great-grandfather?” She burst out laughing.

“I assure you I didn’t have children.”

“That’s not what I meant,” she said amused. “I just meant your age.”

“Does it bother you?”
