He smiled and nodded. Stepping next to the bed, he gently lifted Evangeline into his arms. She was much lighter than her sister. He didn’t move as her head dropped back. Gwen stepped next to him and held her sister’s head while he sat her in the wheelchair.

Quick steps approached the room before a nurse stepped inside. “That was fast. I just came to help you.”

“Thank you Stacy, but Rayen here helped me.”

“Ah, I see a strong man.” Stacy came closer with a small bag in her hands. “I haven’t been able to hook up her feed yet.”

“Don’t worry, just leave it here and I’ll do it.”

“Are you three going to go outside?”

“Yes.”

“I’ll bring some drinks out then.” Stacy turned with a smile and left the room.

Rayen watched as Gwen strapped Evangeline into the wheelchair before taking the bag Stacy had left on a table next to the door. She hung it on the wheelchair before opening up a drawer next to the bed.

“She can’t eat so she has a G-Tube.” She must have seen his confused look and smiled. “It’s a surgical implant so that we can access her stomach and feed her.”

She grabbed a water bottle and syringe from the table and returned to her sister. Lifting Evangeline’s shirt, she showed him what she was talking about. It looked like a little plastic button on her stomach. She filled the syringe with water and grabbed a small plastic tube. Opening the button, she hooked the tube onto the stomach.

“It's easier than it looks. All you have to do is rinse it with water before hooking up the bag with food. A pump just slowly pushes the food inside so she can digest it.”

“I didn’t know that was possible.”

“I thought the same about vampires.” She whispered the last word and giggled.

After taking care of Evangeline’s needs, Gwen pushed her through the hallway and onto a porch that overlooked a beautiful garden.

“I usually just sit here or push her through the garden, whatever you like.”

“How about we take a little stroll? I can push her if you like.”

Gwen nodded and they walked on the little paths all around the garden. Chatting with Evangeline, Gwen told her about her work week and how her boss had been stressed and made everyone’s day hell. She left out the part where she nearly got raped and told her that she’d moved in with them again.

She didn’t say anything about them being vampires, nor did she specify their relationship. She likely had no clue how to explain what had happened. In just a day, she’d gone from being single and living alone to having three vampires wanting to be close to her at all times.

After a while, they’d made a full circle around the garden and returned to the porch. Someone had placed two glasses of lemonade on one of the tables. She sat down at that table and Rayen placed Evangeline next to her. Taking the seat on on Gwen’s other side, he looked over the garden. Gwen leaned on her sister, placing her head in her lap.

“I’m happy you know, and I wish you could meet everyone. We could’ve played our games, making everyone guess who we are. Not even mom could tell us apart if we put enough effort into it.”

Tears started to fall down her cheeks and into Evangeline’s lap. Wanting to soothe her he started to stroke her back.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered, and he knew her words were meant for him.

“There is no need, little bird.”

She waited for her tears to cease before drying her face and pushing Evangeline back inside. In the dining room, Gwen gave her sister a kiss and promised to be back next week. Holding his hand tightly, Gwen walked out towards the car.

As always, he opened the door for her. Only this time, she hesitated. Her blue eyes looked up at him, a mixture of sadness and gratitude. Suddenly, as if she’d made the decision within a split second, she wrapped her arms around his shoulders. Pushing onto her toes, she pressed her lips against his.

Instantly he reciprocated the hug and leaned into the kiss. He soaked up all the peachiness he could before she pulled back far too soon. He didn’t want to, but he let her go. Her cheeks had turned a hot pink and the sadness had lifted from her face.

“Thank you for coming.”

“It was my pleasure.”

As they drove off, she nervously fidgeted with her blouse. She noticed him looking at her and quickly explained, “I didn’t mean to be so angry with Silas.”
