“I was faster than you,” he grinned.

She froze, her eyes glued to his chest. She hadn’t seen him naked yet. Having her back turned to him this whole time she hadn’t been able to study him. His chest was covered in what looked like scars. Her eyes trailed all over his skin and slowly traveled downward to his stomach. Her feet moved without a thought as she dropped the shampoo and reached both her hands to touch his skin.

She hadn’t paid much attention to how their skin felt other than cool. Now with her palms on his chest he felt unnaturally smooth. Her fingers trailed to one of his scars though she couldn’t feel a difference in texture.

“What happened?” She looked up and saw a heavy shadow lay over his face.

“I’ll tell you later. It’s a long story and you should eat.”

She nodded and grabbed a towel. As she dried herself, Silas stared at her thighs. His eyes darkened in anger the longer they rested on them. She knew what he was staring at but couldn’t bring herself to look down.

“I should’ve taken my time killing them. I should’ve made them suffer for hurting you.”

Goosebumps appeared all over her body. “I would think stripping someone of his throat while still alive is quite tortuous.”

“Not enough.”

Though she liked his protectiveness, the images flooding her mind made her sick to her stomach. She reached for her neck, where she tried to feel her cut. Silas stepped closer laying his fingers over hers.

“Rayen healed it earlier, when he kissed your neck.”

“What?”

“Our saliva can heal minor cuts. After feeding on someone, we can close those punctures and heal our marks.”

“Makes sense.”

Taking her jaw in between his fingers, he lifted her head. “I should’ve never let you see what I’ve done but seeing you hurt and vulnerable… I lost my temper.”

“When I think about it, I feel sick, not because you killed them but because I know they’re gone and I feel safe. I feel horrible because I know even though they hurt me they didn’t deserve it. It’s contradicting because part of me feels like I should condemn you for what you’ve done but I don’t because it makes me feel safe. I also don’t want to feel ungrateful for what you’ve done for me.”

He tilted his head and studied her closer. “You’re everything but ungrateful.”

Letting go of her, he handed her some pajamas and dressed himself. Silas silently followed her downstairs where Amon and Rayen were leaning against the counter with glasses in their hands.

While she started to cook some pasta, Rayen leaned against the counter next to her. “Will you go to work tomorrow or stay with us?”

“Work.”

“Silas, we need to be better at our convincing game.”

“I don’t know about you, but I did fantastic.”

She turned red instantly. “It’s not that.”

Rayen gently leaned closer and kissed her cheek, cooling her blush with his lips. “I know, little bird. We’re just being cheeky.”

“Would you like to ride together, Gwendoline?”

She turned to look over her shoulder. Amon seemed more at ease, his face brighter. “Yes.”

“Well, you two can have a fun ride.” Rayen leaned back and sipped on his glass.

“Aren’t you coming?”

“Rayen only went to the office because you were there,” Silas said, tattling on Rayen. “Now that you’re not there anymore, he won’t set foot into the office.”

“So, Amon does all the work and you both just have a good time. That’s not very nice.”
