He paused as his eyes fearfully looked down at her. With his free hand he let his fingers travel down her jawline.

“Being free, I turned into a monster, a demon. I’d been starved for so long that all the easily accessible blood let me lose my mind. I didn’t have my thirst under control, I never learned how to. Rayen stumbled across me. He thought I was a newborn without his creator.” His voice broke, his eyes pleadingly flickering to Rayen.

“Silas was near our New York home, roaming the streets, killing without hiding what he was doing. Settled vampires want to keep their area safe and stay undetected by everyone. A loose vampire who kills freely is a threat. I went after Silas, wanting to eliminate the threat he was posing on us and our lifestyle.”

“He returned to our home with a one-hundred-year-old vampire who didn’t have any kind of control,” Amon continued. “We helped Silas overcome his thirst and gave him a new home.”

Silas’s sad and fearing eyes looked down on her. “I won’t hurt you.”

She quickly sat up and cupped his face in her hands. “I know you won’t hurt me.”

He leaned his forehead against hers and closed his eyes, soaking in her touch.

“Silas, I’m not afraid of you. I think you are brave and strong for surviving and even braver now that you have shared your story with me.”

He leaned against her for a while, not moving or saying a word, just needing her to hold him. She gave him the time he needed and only pulled back when he initiated it.

“Would you like me to read to you again?”

She smiled. “Only if you remember what part I fell asleep at last time.”

“I do.”

Before either of them could move to get the book, Amon was already handing it to Silas. She leaned against Silas’s shoulders and reached to hold Rayen’s hand. Silas’s dark husky voice filled the room as he started reading. Rayen came closer and cuddled up to her while Amon stayed in his armchair. When she could no longer focus on the meanings of the words Silas was reading, she sat up and stretched.

“Are you going to bed?” Rayen asked as if something sad was about to happen.

“Yes, if not I won’t be able to get up in the morning.” She gave Silas a kiss on the cheek and stood up before turning to Amon. “Do you mind us leaving a little before eight tomorrow morning? I have to be in the office at nine.”

“Not at all. It is my pleasure,” he said lightly, his eyes much warmer than usual.

Before she could say anything else, Rayen wrapped his arms around her. He shifted her weight in his arms, so she was now carried up the stairs bridal style. She leaned her head against his chest, only now realizing how quiet his body was.

“You don’t have a heartbeat.”

He chuckled and opened the door to her room. “No we don’t.”

“I feel stupid only realizing that now.”

He sat her on the bed and picked her chin up, looking down on her. “You aren’t stupid, you’re just processing a lot of new things right now.” His smile turned into a mischievous grin, his fingers traveling over her cheek. “And this is only the beginning. We have so much more to show you.”

Reaching up, she pushed her hands beneath his shirt. His skin was just as smooth as Silas’s but he, as she’d suspected, was less ripped.

“That scares me a little.”

He stepped closer, spreading her knees for him to kneel before her. Cupping her face in both his hands he gently caressed her with his thumbs.

“No need. We’ll be by your side at all times.”

She leaned into his touch, her hands moving over his shoulders to his neck. He was broader than Silas.

“I like that.”

He let his fingers travel down her jawline towards her neck, his chest humming as he caressed her skin. Leaning forward, she pressed her lips on his. They were a little damp and thick, eagerly reciprocating her movements. She gripped his hair as he slid his hands down her sides and tugged on her shirt, lifting it up at the hem. He freed himself from the kiss and leaned back. His eyes hungrily gazed over her body as he pulled her shirt over her head and tossed it to the side.

“So fucking gorgeous,” he groaned letting his finger run over her sternum between her breasts.

His words made her all giddy, and her heart thump. She wasn’t wearing a bra–she hadn’t put one on after her shower. He licked his lips and came closer, his tongue eagerly pushing out to taste her nipple. She gasped, not sure how she should feel about his tongue licking her. He was the first to ever do so. The sensation of it didn’t feel bad, just unexpected.
