We haven’t known each other that long. We’ve only slept together a handful of times. We’re not even dating properly.

I can’t have fallen in love with him.

I blink and realize he’s looking at me because someone’s asked me a question, and they’re all waiting for me to answer. “Sorry, what?”

He grins. “Saxon asked you who you’re interviewing next on your podcast.”

“Oh shit, sorry.” I try to bump-start my brain and steer it away from the thought of saying I do to Kip Chevalier. “I’m talking to the guy who wrote the Ruffpunk series on Wednesday.”

“I haven’t read that,” Saxon says.

“I have,” Kip tells him. “You’d love it. It’s a historical fantasy set in a Tudor steampunk world, where Shakespeare invents a new form of magic using poetry and casts spells with his words. It’s fantastic, and it’s won loads of awards. It’s quite a coup to get the author on.”

“I’ll definitely listen in,” Saxon says. “I’d like to read that.”

“She did an AMA on Reddit,” Kip says. “She had so many questions.”

“Most of them were from you,” I say, and Saxon and Catie laugh.

“No they weren’t,” he scolds. “You were really popular.”

“I’m so impressed,” Catie says. “I’m tempted to ask for your autograph.”

“Oh, stop it.”

“I’m serious,” she states. “I’ve never known anyone famous before.”

“I’m not famous,” I say, embarrassed, but I can see that to her, someone who interviews well-known authors, who publishes a popular podcast, and who does an AMA on Reddit, isfamous.

“Did you go to the Wonderland exhibition?” Saxon asks, and I nod.

“Kip took me. It was so good, and really clever how it made you feel as if you were actually in the story.”

“Especially for you,” Catie says with a smile. “Alice!”

“So who are you, the Mad Hatter?” Saxon asks Kip.

“If I am then you’re the Cheshire Cat,” he replies, and Catie and I giggle, because that seems so appropriate.

Kip smiles. “Finished your coffee?” he asks me.

I have the last mouthful. “Yeah, done.”

“Come on, then. Let’s leave these good people and head home.”

We exchange hugs and kisses, and Catie makes me promise to stay in touch so I can keep recommending books for her. Then Kip and I head out to his Merc.

“That was a fun evening,” I say as he heads back toward Brooklyn, the Merc gliding quietly through the traffic.

“It was. So… what was this about a playroom?”

“Oh God, I can’t believe I told you that…”

“Come on. Spill the beans.”

I sigh. “I was talking about you being bossy in bed, and Catie asked whether I meant like in Fifty Shades. Apparently the hero had some kind of playroom with… um… whips and stuff.”

“Did you put her straight?”
