“That’s possible?”

“Sure, if you’re in the right position. If not, adding fingers or a toy should get you there.”

“I’m assuming you don’t mean a Barbie doll.”

He reaches out his hand and tucks a stray strand of my hair behind my ear. “I’m guessing you’ve never owned a vibrator?”

I shake my head.

He sighs again, drawing another strand slowly through his fingers.

“I wish you weren’t Alex’s friend,” I say wistfully.

His gaze drops to my lips. “Me, too.”

I remember how we kissed while I did the magic trick. His lips were firm and warm. I want to kiss him again, but I’m not brave enough to be the one to close the distance. He’s so experienced and sexy, and I’m just a clueless kid in his eyes. I don’t want him to reject me.

Instead, I look up into his eyes, unable to hide my longing as I imagine going to bed with him. Having him tell me I’m beautiful and amazing as he moves inside me. Being cheeky to him, taunting him until he holds me down and… does stuff I can’t even imagine. What would it feel like to have an orgasm? I have no idea.

He holds my gaze for a long moment, then looks at my mouth. He lowers his head—I don’t know if he’s doing it consciously—but his mouth is now tantalizingly close to mine. We sit like that for what feels like an eternity, an inch apart, our breaths mingling. I can almost hear his desire fighting with his conscience. Will he kiss me? There’s nobody around to see. No way that anyone would ever know.

Finally, though, he gives a little huff and moves away, leaning back in his chair. Then he reaches across to his other side, picks up his jacket, and brings it back to rest on his lap. Why’s he done that? He gives me a wry look. Ohhh… he must have an erection…

Holy heck, Damon Chevalier has a hard-on for me.

“Don’t say a word,” he instructs moodily, moving his hand so his arm is resting along the back of my chair rather than around me. We’re still sitting close, though, and I can smell his cologne, and feel the warmth of his body through his top.

“Didn’t realize you had principles,” I say sulkily.

He gives a short, grouchy laugh.

“Just for that,” I tell him, “I’m going to ask you questions about sex all the way to Christchurch.”

“Jesus.”

“Serves you right.”

He turns his head to look at me. “I’m sorry.”

I poke him in the ribs.

He brings up a hand, slides it to the back of my head, and pulls me toward him. For a second, I think he’s going to kiss me this time… but he just touches his lips to my forehead.

“You’ll find someone,” he promises, lowering his hand. “Next time, just don’t settle, and don’t sit back and wait for him to get it right. To be fair to Cole, we’re not born knowing how to please a girl in bed, although most of us watch porn so we usually pick up stuff from there. But there’s nothing wrong with you explaining what you want.”

“I tried,” I reply, “but he saw it as a threat, I think.”

He gives a long sigh. “Well, hopefully the next one won’t.”

A heaviness settles in my stomach, and I turn in the chair, drawing up my legs, feeling embarrassed. What the hell am I doing, flirting with my brother’s best mate like this? Damon works with Alex—he’s not going to jeopardize that relationship for a fling, especially with an inexperienced girl like me who doesn’t know the first thing about pleasing a guy in bed.

“Not far now,” he says, and I look up to see the lights of Picton glimmering in the distance. The sun is almost below the horizon, and the sky is the color of a fresh bruise—purple and orange and yellow.

“I’m sorry,” I say.

He looks back at me. “You’ve got nothing to feel sorry for. I’m the one who should apologize. I’m older. I’m the guy. I shouldn’t have said all that.”

“I’m so glad you did, though. I’ve learned so much. I just wish…”
