I don’t have the first fucking clue what the story is about. A load of singing, which is impressive, accompanied by a lot of wailing and stricken looks between the characters on the stage.

“It’s so beautifully sad,” Maddy whispers, leaning close so I can hear her over the music. “She’s desperately in love with Pinkerton. She’s waited years for him to return to her.”

“You can tell that from the singing?”

“By the way she looks at him.” She lays a hand over my arm and points with her free one. “See? But he’s re-married while they were apart without telling her.”

I squint at the stage. The actress looks hopeful, in love, I guess, like Maddy says. But I can’t read his face.

“Oh my god!” Maddy brings a hand to her mouth as the music builds. Then grabs my thigh with her other hand and squeezes it. “She’s going to do something.”

She lets out a gasp as the female character acts out killing herself.

“No.” Maddy wipes tears from her eyes, enthralled by the stage as the story ends. “Logan, it’s… Oh my god, it’s so sad. But so utterly beautiful too.” She sniffs, wiping the tears from her cheeks as she smiles through them.

My mouth goes dry.

“It is,” I agree, my voice thick. “Beautiful.”

Her breath hitches and she blinks at me. “You enjoyed it?”

“Never felt anything like it,” I reply with complete honesty.

Her dark curls fall around her face, and her hazel eyes shine with tears, but sparkle with energy at the same time. Her lips are a deep pink from where she’s biting the bottom one, bringing more blood to the soft surface.

She breaks eye contact with me and leans down to rub her foot.

“Is it okay if we go now? These shoes are killing me.”

I look down at the high heels she’s wearing that I also insisted on buying her.

“Of course, my driver will be waiting outside.”

“Good,” she groans, continuing to rub her foot.

I stand and offer her my hand to help her up. She takes it and bites her lip, her eyes glittering.

“You know, I can’t wait to get the stupid things off and put some slippers on.”

My lips twitch.

I place a hand on her lower back to guide her to the exit.

“All slippers have been removed from our penthouse. In fact, I’ll pay to see them banned from Italy altogether. I want to live to see thirty-four.”

She giggles. Fuckinggiggles. And it takes every ounce of strength I have not to do anything that could taint this moment and make it something other than it is…Magic.

I promised Maddy I would make her laugh one day, but as I lead her out, I acknowledge a simple fact.

I never expected it to feel this good.

Chapter 14

Maddy

Mysmilehasn’tleftmy face since walking out of Teatro alla Scala. Being there, feeling the emotions running through the opera house from every person in there is the experience I’ve only dreamed about.

Logan swipes his key card, and the penthouse level lights up on the elevator display panel. I sink back against the wall with a sigh as it begins to climb.
