“Yes.”

She squeezed some cold gel on my abdomen and started moving the wand around, eyes pinned to the screen. She always looked very focused during my appointments and I’d learned the first time I was here for a check-up that her frown didn’t mean something was wrong, but I couldn’t help from chewing my lower lip.

“The heart is strong; measurements look very good for how far you are.” She smiled. “You have a healthy baby.”

“Grazie Dio35.” I whispered.

“Oh, my.” She said with joy and I raised my head.

“What?”

“Pina,” her voice was soft, “you’re having a baby girl.”

My heart started pounding in my chest so loud that I could hear it. A girl. Garon and I were having a little girl and now that I knew, it felt so real. For the first part of my pregnancy, I was suspended in some kind of numbness. I was shocked, then I was happy, but it didn’t feel quite real. Now, I had a very real baby bump and a very real baby girl.

“Jesus.” I covered my mouth to stop the sobs.

Grazia was crying too. She was a mess when she hugged me.

“I’m so happy for you.” She whispered. What I saw on her face was pure joy and a shade of yearning. I don’t know why she was doing this to herself when it was clear she wanted a child as much as Salvatore did.

“Thank you. We’re not going to name her Grazia.”

“I don’t care. I just want to meet her.”

“Yeah.” I said. “Me too.”

“How will you tell Garon?” Her eyes sparkled.

“I have an idea.”

At midnight Garon still wasn’t home. I waited to have dinner with him but eventually gave in and devoured half of the lasagna and took a three hour nap. I expected him to be there when I woke up, but there was no trace of him.

Finally, around one in the morning, Grazia called to tell me she get through to Salvatore and they were a few minutes away from home. Apparently one of their tires blew on their way back to Palermo and it took a while to get it fixed.

I didn’t care he was late, I was just excited he was coming home so I could share my news, so I went and got the bags and boxes of supplies Grazia helped me picked up. When Garon walked through the door, I was ready, so I ran and jumped into his arms.

“Hello, handsome.”

“Excited to see me?” He laughed.

“Always. Kiss me.” He devoured me with his lips. “Are you hungry?”

“A little. We skipped dinner thinking we’d make it home in time. I’ll find something in the fridge, don’t worry. You should be in bed.”

“I just woke up.” I told him. “Come.”

I took his hand and guided him into the kitchen, but instead of letting him go to the breakfast table, I made him sit on a small plastic chair for children. Grazia and I picked a play set earlier today.

“What the hell?” He asked, confused.

“Just sit down and shut up.” I ordered.

While Garon was trying to figure out if I’d gone completely insane, I arranged the plastic tea cups, filled one with whiskey for him and one with orange juice for me, and also got the cupcakes with pink frosting out of the fridge. All while he followed me with his eyes.

Without a word, I dug through the bags and pulled out a plastic tiara and a neon pink feather boa, He sat silent while I put the accessories on him.
