“I want one to look at your arm,” Bo replied.

“Please?” I whispered, pulling back.

“Acedia,” he grumbled, stopping short and tugging me to him before I could take off. “What did you promise me two nights ago?”

“That I would obey you,” I offered quietly.

“What else?”

“That I would never run from you.”

“And what did I say would happen if you did any of these things?

“That there would be consequences, and I would not like them.”

“And what was the deal we made last night?”

“That I would yield to consequences without fuss in exchange for sex.”

“So where is the communication breakdown at?”

My shoulders slumped. “I’m scared of doctors. When I had to see them in the city, I was always sedated.”

Bo sighed. “Do you trust me to protect you?”

I nodded.

“Then know I will not allow anything to truly harm you. I will be there every step of the way. I just need you to be brave. Can you do that for me?”

As I looked up into his expressive eyes, I knew I would do anything he ever asked of me—though, I would never dare let him know that he had that much power over me.

“Yes, sir.”

“Good.” He kissed my knuckles. “Girl.”

Chapter Nine

When we walked into the doctor’s office, it did not have any of the technology I was used to seeing when visiting the medical bots in the city.

The woman who came out to greet us took one look at Bo, smiled broadly, and rushed around the counter to him.

“Sweetie. It is so nice to see you.” She gripped Bo’s shoulders then pulled him in for a long hug. Once she released him, she noticed me standing awkwardly off to the side. “Oh, you’re new!”

I nodded. “My name is Acedia. It’s nice to meet you.”

“Oh! You’re a Sloth.”

“How did you know?”

“The name. Ignavia, Otium, Aergia—the Ai is not very creative when giving name suggestions to expectant parents. It’s always variations of the same concept for those born in the city.”

“Oh. Those are really pretty names.”

“As is yours. Well, come—come in. I’m Althea, though most just call me Doc. I heard about the city going into lockdown.” She leaned in and spoke quietly. “I’m so sorry to hear about your people. I wish I had better words of comfort to offer, but there are none for tragedies like this. It’s simply unacceptable.”

My eyes watered at the sentiment. “Thank you.”

“So what brings my favorite son-in-law to visit?” she asked Bo.
