As one, every fae and hybrid and human slammed their hands—and their magic—into the barrier.

* * *

In the distance, the skiffs lined up, filled with some of the bravest people on this continent.

Madinia’s red hair stood out, her dye almost completely faded. She lifted one arm, channeling her fire into the barrier. Everyone in her skiff did the same. Two boats over, Natan lifted his own hand, along with what had to be one hundred other fae, hybrids, and humans.

My throat tightened. Lorian had moved to the other side of the ship and was aiming the last of his power at the barrier. I could feel him weakening, exhausted.

Everyone was weakening.

I wished I had an attack power. Wished I could funnel everything I had into bringing the barrier down.

I turned toward Daharak. Her expression was victorious, as if there was no way this plan wouldn’t work.

And her words rang in my head.

“That was beautiful. How did you know that island was going to reflect their magic?”

Reflect. Another word for “repel.”

“Oh gods. Oh gods, oh gods.”

Trembling, I looked up. The cloud of smoke Lorian had sent toward our enemies had drifted higher.

Blocking out the sun.

When the land itself repels war…

And unnatural clouds obscure the sun…

I whirled. Just as one of Regner’s men raised his hand, creating a whirlpool of water in an attempt to drag the skiffs away from the barrier.

When the waves are coerced…

Where was the threat?

Urgency burned through me, until I panted, my gaze shifting from ship to ship.

My legs moved of their own accord, and I sprinted toward Lorian, still craning my neck, desperately searching.

One man wasn’t using his power to take down the barrier. No, Conreth was staring at Regner himself, who was now standing on the upper deck of his ship, staring at the barrier, screaming at his soldiers.

Boom!

The sky cracked. It seemed as if the world had torn in two. The ship rolled, until I dropped to my knees, sliding on the deck.

The barrier had fallen.

I grabbed the nearest rope and clawed my way to my feet. Lifting my head, I saw the moment Conreth decided to risk it. His power hurtled across the waves, directly for Regner’s ship. My heart stopped. Regner had some of his most important people on that ship. Including my cousin. Regner may not die, but Conreth could end the others and cripple Regner’s armies.

But my instincts were still screaming.

I stumbled toward my mate.

“Lorian!” I roared.

He’d thrown back his head in a victorious laugh. Gradually, as if in slow motion, he turned toward me.
