“Lorian…please…”

He growled, and I almost smiled. He might have the upper hand, but when I begged using his name, he lost all control.

He thrust deeper, hitting that spot inside me that made my vision turn fuzzy. One flick of his thumb across my clit and I shattered, pleasure consuming me as he continued his long, steady strokes.

I went limp, slumping to the bed, but Lorian flipped me over, slid back inside me, and cupped my face.

“Like this,” he said. “One more time, just like this.”

“I can’t.”

He smiled, sliding one hand down to my nipple and tweaking it as he ground into me.

We came together, and Lorian shuddered against me, pressing his lips to mine. I wound my arms around his neck, holding him tightly, unwilling to let him go.We lay like that for long moments, until Lorian rolled away, pulling me with him until my head rested on his chest.

But he was quiet. It was a strange quiet, as if he was deep in thought. I craned my neck, studying his face.

He was surveying the ceiling, mouth tight, a frown on his face.

“What is it?”

He glanced at me, and his arm tightened around me.

“Nothing,” he said.

My heart tripped, and I laid my head on his chest, my throat tightening.

Lorian had just lied to me.

CHAPTER ELEVEN

The sky darkened. The others had probably gone downstairs to eat, but Lorian ordered dinner to be sent up to our room.

Our room.

Lorian stroked my back, and I listened to the sound of his heart beneath my head. But we’d spent what little time we could spare. Lifting my head off his chest, I forced myself to roll away, reaching for my tunic. Lorian studied me. “You need to talk about it.”

I shook my head. “I can’t. Not yet.” I couldn’t linger on the way I’d lain on that stone floor as if it were the bottom of the world. As if I were lying in a pit I could never climb out of.

I couldn’t tell him I’d left a part of myself there in that pit. And that I might never get it back.

Lorian was still studying me with those eyes that saw far too much. “When you’re ready to talk, I’m here,” he said. “I will always be here.”

My throat ached. “Did you find Cavis?”

The muscles around his eyes tightened. “Regner took his body with him.”

A thousand images assaulted my mind at once. All of them various ways that Regner could be disrespecting Cavis’s body. I closed my eyes, and Lorian caught my wrists.

“There are…spells Regner can use to try to recover his memories. His knowledge.”

My head spun, my stomach churned, and Lorian placed a cool hand on the back of my neck as I fought not to vomit.

I couldn’t fall apart. That wouldn’t help anyone. I forced my eyes open. “We can’t let that happen.”

“We won’t.”

“I’m sorry.” There was nothing else I could say.
