“You can read one of them.”

I greedily snatched it from his hand.

Wildcat,

I don’t know if you’ll ever see this letter. I don’t know if I’ll ever give it to you. But I spend my days talking to you in my head. By now, I know you well enough to know how you would answer most of my questions. Your quick humor, sarcasm, and the way you occasionally take my breath away with your honesty…

Gods, I miss you.

My eyes burned as I continued reading. He told me how much he loved me. How much he missed me. That I was the best thing that had ever happened to him. He swore he would find me.

And he had.

Drawing in a shaky breath, I lifted my head. Lorian’s eyes flared at whatever he saw on my face.

“I want the rest.”

He slowly shook his head. “Not all of them are filled with pretty words, Prisca.”

“I want all of your words. Always.”

He heaved a sigh, but he couldn’t argue with that. He wanted the same from me.

His eyes glittered with calculation. “I’ll give you one a week.”

My mouth dropped open. “You—”

His lips firmed. I knew that expression. I wasn’t changing his mind. At least, not right now. Carefully folding the letter, I placed it in my own satchel. “I’ll convince you to hand them over,” I muttered.

Lorian laughed. “I bet you could.”

But I knew why he wasn’t. We were going to war. So Lorian was keeping them for when I’d need them the most. Those letters would be a beacon in my darkest hours. Just as he was.

He stepped up behind me, nuzzling my neck as I reached for the door.

“You smell like me. I like it.”

I liked it too. But I gave him a warning look that made his eyes heat.

I swung open the door. Asinia stood there, her fist raised to knock. She smirked at my rumpled clothes, but her face quickly cleared.

“It’s Madinia,” she said. “She’s planning something.”

* * *

I found Galon, Rythos, and Marth sitting on the roof of the inn. All of them were silent as they watched the village below them.

Rythos glanced up. His eyes met mine, and he gave me a faint smile. “You look…better.”

“I told Prisca. That she’s my mate.”

Galon’s expression was carefully neutral. Marth just nodded, his gaze sliding away from mine.

I felt my hands fist. These were my brothers, but that didn’t matter to the most feral part of me. That part whispered that they were a threat.

If I could arrange it so that no other males were ever around my wildcat again, I would make it happen without a second thought.

Galon was still studying my face. “I see the mating is hitting you hard.”
