I throw the covers off my naked body, so she can see exactly what she does to me. “No complaints over here for being woken up.”

Her eyes widen. Did she just lick her lips? Fuck!

She slides down my body, but I halt her progress with my hands under her arms. “Hey, I didn’t mean you had to blow me.”

“I know but maybe I need to.” Her hand stretches around the base of my cock, her lips around the head.

My eyes squeeze closed. Fine. No complaints at all.

The next morning, we don’t waste any time calling Todd and filling him in on the most recent message. It gives me some peace of mind, knowing he’ll be following up on it. I’ve been worrying all night about how to keep her safe. Dangerous scenarios buzzed through my mind like a mosquito that just wouldn’t go away. Even Allie’s warm naked body pressed up close against me couldn’t quieten my fears.

The calmness of Todd’s voice comes from my phone lying between us on the counter, and it should be reassuring. For Allie, it might be. But to me it’s just words. I want action. I want this asshole found.

“What about protection?” I ask gruffly, not even trying to mask how pissed off I am. “She needs private security to watch her during the day.” My fingers run deep tracks through my recently combed hair.

Allie glares at me from her nearby barstool and when she has my attention, mouths a definitive no.

He takes a few seconds then says, “I don’t think that’s necessary just yet. Everything so far points to the fact that this person is in California, not New York,” Todd’s response appears considered and is delivered in a reasonable tone. It makes me want to pick up the phone and throw it across the room. Some days I wish that kind of behavior was acceptable.

“I agree,” Allie says with some strength, and I don’t miss the tightness in her expression when she turns to look at me.

“Okay, I’ll be in touch,” Todd says, then ends the call abruptly. But abruptness with Todd is not unusual, it’s how he ends all of our calls.

Allie turns toward me. Her arms are crossed, and her eyes are flashing a warning of a storm to come. But before she can say anything, I jump in to plead my case. “I need to know you’re safe when I’m not with you.” I stand and step closer, placing my hands on her upper arms.

She seems to sense how on edge I am and relaxes beneath my palms. “Logan, I won’t do anything silly with my safety, you have to believe that.” She uncrosses her arms and reaches her hands under my suit jacket to come to rest on my hips.

My arms wrap around her. I know my protective tendencies are becoming out of control but it’s in my DNA. I can’t seem to stop feeling this way.

She searches my face looking for some indication that her words have eased my concern. I don’t think she finds it because she says, “Look I can work at home today. There’s some paperwork I need to do, and calls to make for the business. Will that make you feel better?”

“Thank you,” I mumble, and the tight fist that’s been squeezing my heart since she showed me the message last night eases a little.

She smiles. “Now, Mr. Carlson, don’t you have a job you need to get to?”

I bend to kiss her, and her arms stretch up to wrap around my neck.

It’s a good fifteen minutes before we’re leaving my apartment. Allie to return across the hall to hers and me to head to the office.

A couple of hours later, I’m at my desk still struggling to concentrate on anything work-related or more accurately anything that isn’t Allie. There’s something Todd said this morning that keeps running on a loop through my mind, “… this person is in California, not New York.”

Allie told me her grandparents passed away a few years ago and I know her father is still in prison, but I guess her mother still lives in California. Maybe it would be worth finding out where she is and seeing if she’s getting threats too. I tap my pen on the desk, wondering if I should speak to Todd.

Allie is not going to want to reach out to her mother. She’s made it very clear that the relationship between them is broken. But if finding her mother can help to discover who is behind these threats, then it’s got to be worth it. It just needs to be done discreetly so her mother remains unaware of the investigations or the origins of the investigations. I see the effect this is having on Allie, and I don’t like it. I have to do something.

I scroll to Todd’s name in my contacts list and swipe to dial.

“What can I do for you?” he answers in his usual straight-down-the-line business style. An attribute I’ve always liked about Todd; he doesn’t like to waste time with the trivial shit.

Following his lead, I dive into why I called. “Have you looked into finding Allie’s mother? I think it’s time we learned if she’s being blackmailed too.”

“I can do that. But is Allie okay with the idea?”

“She doesn’t know.” I pause briefly. Allie is going to hate this idea which of course is why I haven’t spoken to her about it. “Look, I’ll handle Allie. At this point, all I’m interested in is ending this nightmare for her.”

“You’re the client so I’ll do it. But as your friend, I’d suggest you talk to her about this sooner rather than later. I haven’t raised the subject of her mother because she doesn’t seem to want anything to do with her.”
