My heart pounded. “I don’t know where the money is, so you may as well kill me.”

His eyes narrowed. “We’ll see about that.”

He left the room, closing and locking the door behind him. I gazed at the tray and grabbed the water, chugging it like I’d been on a deserted island for a month rather than three days.

Three days since my boyfriend was killed.

Three days since I robbed Vincenzo Calabresi.

Three days since my life changed forever.

Standing, I moved to the door, hearing raised voices. I bit my lip, looking around the room for the hundredth time for something I could use as a weapon.

“Think, Nyla.”

They checked on me every so often. Maybe I could overpower one of them and take his gun.

My parents had kept me from the mafia world, but I knew how to fight and protect myself.

If I could escape, I could leave the country.

“Whatever you're thinking, it won’t work.”

I jumped. I’d been so absorbed in my thoughts that I hadn’t heard the door open. Vincenzo stood in the doorway.

I backed up, moving closer to the bed as Vincenzo advanced into the room.

“I’m going to ask you a question, and I want an honest answer.”

“O-Okay.” I stuttered, keeping my eyes on him.

A vein throbbed in his forehead. “Where’s my money?”

“Mark kept it,” I answered truthfully.

“He’s dead. You helped him steal from me.”

I was stricken with goosebumps, but not in a good way. “I-I can get your money back.”

“How?”

“Mark owed some people. I can tell you where to get it back.”

His eyebrows melded together. “Who?”

“Loan sharks over on the west side.”

“Why should I trust you?”

I lowered my head in shame. “You have no reason to trust me. But I can return your money.”

“Let's go.”

“Where?”

Vincenzo lunged at me, gripping me by the jaw. “Question me again and see what happens.”

“Sorry. I won’t. I promise.”
