I ignore her taunts. “Carter and Romo will watch you until I get back.”

“He won’t go away easily,” Nyla said.

Her words made me suspicious. “Did Cono say something you’re not telling me?”

She moved away from me. “No.”

“Get some rest.”

I left, telling my team to keep an eye on her.

Chapter 9

Nyla

“You’ve always been a fuckup, but maybe Mark put you in a position to help your family for once,” Uncle Cono argued.

“What are you saying?”

“Marry Vincenzo and you’re free.”

“Free?”

“He gets the money you stole, and I leave you alone for good. The second trust fund holds thirty million dollars.”

I frowned. “Pay him five, and I keep the rest with no strings?”

“Yes.”

“No. I’m not marrying to satisfy your egos,” I said stubbornly.

Uncle Cono stalked around his desk, wrapped his hand around my neck, and squeezed, cutting off my air. “Bitch. I never liked you. I never understood what my brother saw in your mother,” he snarled before loosening his grip.

Coughing, I rubbed my throat to soothe the ache. “What are you saying?”

“I’m saying you mean nothing to me. I’m glad Mark took you away. He saved me the trouble of looking out for your spoiled ass.”

Tears spilled down my cheeks. “How can you say these things to me?”

He reached behind him to remove a cigar and lit it up. “I paid him to date you.”

“You’re lying.”

“I had no interest in parenting a child my brother was foolish in bringing into the world.”

“My father loved me!”

“He’s not your father,” Uncle Cono sneered.

My chest tightened with shock. “W-What?” I stammered, slowly rising from the chair.

Uncle Cono sighed. “Little girl, your mother should’ve told you the truth—but everything was left to me. What I’ve told you stays in this room. If I could’ve removed you altogether, I would have done it years ago.”

I went rigid in my seat. “He’s not my father?”

“My brother adopted you.” He shook his head in frustration.

The air felt thick around me. “That’s a lie.”
