My father paused with his fork halfway to his mouth, Rena choked on her food, and Renato glared at me.

Chapter 11

Nyla

The entire room fell silent after Vincenzo declared that we were getting married.

My mind went into overdrive, thinking about how I could be anyone’s wife, let alone a mobster’s. What did he expect of me? Would I have to live with him for longer than he needed? Where would I fit into his world? And sex had its own issues that I hadn’t even brought up.

A week later, I was still blind to the answers. Vincenzo went to work, and when he came home, he checked in with Carter on what I was doing. The plan was to get me back into Uncle Cono’s house to find the safe and grab the trust fund papers. I tried calling Cono to meet, and he blew me off every time, making me worry that it was all a game to him.

Sighing, I slipped my feet into my slippers and strolled to the kitchen, putting a plate on the counter to cut into the pot roast that his mother made last night and sent home with Vincenzo.

After hearing the locks on the door open, I hurried from the kitchen, but my excitement died when I saw Angelina with a nasty snarl.

“He’s not here.” I turned to walk back to the kitchen.

“This was our place,” Angelina enlightened me.

I was pissed for a split second before regaining control of my emotions. “Why are you telling me?”

“Vincenzo told me you were staying here.”

Her confession made me angry. Having her in my business was the last thing I needed. Bitches like her thrived off attention. Do I really care?

“That happens when you get married.” I raised my hand, wiggling my fingers and showing her the five-karat diamond ring.

After the announcement at his parents’ house, Vincenzo and I returned to his condo and talked. We agreed that neither of us expected it to last more than a month, that we both needed to play our parts, and he would let me walk away once I got my hands on the trust fund.

“You’re lying!” Angelina rushed at me, grasping my hand and checking out the ring.

I yanked away, and she pushed my shoulder. “Push me again and find out what I’m capable of, bitch!” I snarled, pointing my finger in her face.

“You tricked him. Vincenzo is mine,” Angelina spat.

“Not anymore. Maybe if you talk to me nicely, I’ll hook you up with one of his cousins,” I sassed, remembering him talking about his extended family in New York. Surprisingly, our conversations had been cordial for the last two days.

“Whatever you did to him, I’ll find out. I’m warning you now: getting comfortable will be your downfall.” She flipped her hair in my face as she whirled around. She gasped as she saw Vincenzo scowling at the front door.

Vincenzo stalked forward, slamming the door behind him. “What are you doing here, Angelina?” he growled.

Angelina backed up. “I-I was dropping off some paperwork.”

“You’ve never been to my condo before. How did you know where to come?” Vincenzo asked.

“I followed you,” Angelina murmured the admission.

“You're fired,” Vincenzo stated.

Her mouth dropped open. “What?”

Firing her seemed a bit drastic. “Vincenzo—"

He held up his hand for me to pause. “Get out,” he told Angelina.

“Vincenzo, you can’t fire me.” Angelina tried to grab his shirt.

Vincenzo stepped out of her hold. “You’ve shown me time after time that you can’t be trusted.”
