“Probably the same way you said Mark got into your head, Cono has played you since you moved in with him.”

Taking in his words, I tried to think back on our conversations and Gianney felt like a big brother, especially when Mark cheated on me a few times and I kicked him out.

“Shit.”

“What?”

“Rena talked my mom into throwing a party for us.”

“Party.”

“Since we got married at the courthouse, she wanted a reception at the house.”

“Wow, your mom is really taking the marriage seriously.”

“I told her it’s not real and will be divorced soon, it goes in one ear and out the other.”

“What’s the harm in a small gathering?”

“She’s inviting 200 guests.” Vincenzo grimaced, texting away on his phone. I reached out to stop him, taking the phone from his hand and seeing what the thread message said.

Madre: Vincenzo, this might be the only time you get married.

Vincenzo: Leave it alone.

Rena: Why? A party would be fun.

Vincenzo: Stay out of my business Rena.

Sante: Rena he’s right.

Rena: Shut up Sante or else.

I giggled at Rena’s response. She and Sante made me giggle all the time.

Vincenzo: This is Nyla. I would love to have a party, Mrs. Calabresi. We’ll be there.

“What are you doing?” Vincenzo tried to grab the phone from my hand.

I whipped around with my back to him. “One second.”

I felt his arm drape around my waist. He pulled me against his chest. “Nyla, I swear to God if you—”

Rena: Yes! I knew you would agree.

Madre: Glad you came around to the idea, see you soon.

Vincenzo: Still pretty new at the marriage thing, you’ve been kind and remind me of my mother.

I handed his phone back to him, letting him read my response.

“Having a party means spending money to fake it to our friends.”

“I’m good at faking things.” I winked at him, on the sly remark.

“Meaning.”

“You know.”
