“I do like you, Nyla. I can admit I was out for revenge at first, wanting to make you pay.”

My heart rate sped up at his confession. Hearing how he really feels about me felt different from the relationship between me and Mark.

“Okay.”

He chuckled at my response, squeezing my thigh. “If the papers show we have to be married for a year before I get the money, then are you willing to stay in the marriage?” he asked.

A gulp of air fills my lungs. “Is that what you want?”

“Only way we work is communication. Mark might have led you into rocky waters, but baby, I’m a real man that needs you to speak up and tell him how you really feel even if it pisses me off.”

“I like you and want to see where we can go.”

“All right, here’s the plan: Cono is expecting you, but not me. I’m going to distract him while you search for the papers.”

“What if I can’t get in the safe or he comes back before I figure out the lock system?”

Vincenzo lifted his shirt, showing his gun. “Cono will be distracted.”

“Tell me you’re not going to hurt him. Are you?”

“Depends on if he disrespects you.”

“Nobody’s ever stood up for me—besides my mom and dad.”

“Mark?”

“Thinking back, it was more about him in the relationship than us building something together. At one point, I left him after he cheated. I still loved him, so I forgave him, and then the gambling got worse, and I told him to stop.”

“He's a boy, not a man.”

“Do you think I’m crazy for liking you, knowing you killed him?”

His eye twitched, and I could tell that the conversation was going in a direction that he’d shut down any minute.

“Focus on the future. Mark is your past, and if you decide tomorrow that you can’t handle my world—”

“You’ll let me go.”

He gritted his teeth, “Nyla, you’re mine even if we get divorced today and live in separate rooms. The second I put my lips on you, it was over.”

Lifting my eyes, I saw Cono, standing in the doorway. “He’s waiting.” I pointed at my uncle.

Vincenzo turned to look at him. “Give him a show.”

He leaned toward me, and I grabbed his shirt, pulling him into me closer and sucking on his top lip.

“PG-13 only,” I teased, releasing him, and wiping red lipstick off his lips.

After climbing from the car, Vincenzo took my hand and escorted me up the steps.

I reached out to hug my uncle, and he patted me on the arm, then shook Vincenzo’s hand.

“Glad you two made it today. I heard from the lawyer, and he wants to wrap up the paperwork.”

“You heard from the lawyer?” I asked, shocked at him.

“Of course, dear. Come have a seat—and Vincenzo, you sit here.” Cono had coffee and muffins on the coffee table.
