“God damn, you are pessimistic,” Grant mumbled.

“Detective.” Her voice was low, her breath shallow.

“Dr. Blade?”

“You’re right. We need to talk. Can you come to my house?”

He turned toward Grant. Her voice sounded hollow. Something was wrong. “Sure. My shift is about to end. I’ll be there in fifteen minutes.”

“Thanks. I’ll be… I’ll be ready.”

“Change of plans,” Montana said as he turned the car back toward the precinct. A sickening sensation fell into the pit of his stomach.

“Hot date?”

“Just a thought.” He had too many ideas about how to catch a killer.

“Uh-huh. I know that look. Be careful, partner. You don’t know how she’s mixed up in all of this.” Grant shook his head.

He exhaled and gave a single nod. “But I have to find out.”

“Yeah. You sure do.”

“What?”

Shrugging, Grant waved him off.

“No, what?” Montana demanded.

“Found out some information about Dr. Blade.”

“Okay, spill it.”

“Her records indicate she turned down some swanky job in Boston.”

He could tell the story wasn’t over yet. “Okay. So?”

“The truth is, the hospital rescinded the offer.”

“And I’m sure you’re going to tell me why.”

Grant walked closer, looking over both shoulders and lowering his voice. “Word has it that she was having an affair with one of her patients. That’s a big no, no.”

Montana exhaled. “Yeah. You’re right.”

“There’s that huge ‘but’ hanging right there. You don’t give a shit. There’s no stopping Mr. Bulldozer. I’ll let you know if they find Michael. I’ll start cross referencing the list. Maybe we’ll get lucky. Then again, maybe pigs will fly. I have a feeling it’s going to be a very long couple of days.“

“Me too.” A cold chill swept through Montana’s system. Destiny was certainly multi-faceted. Perhaps she had her reasons. He also had the distinct feeling the killer was playing with all of them. He suspected there would be additional deaths and very soon. The killer seemed antsy. “I have an idea of how we can get in.”

“You mean to the club?” When Montana didn’t say anything, he groaned. “Oh no. I don’t think I like the sound of this. Your ideas scare me.”

What he was thinking could get him kicked off the force, but they were getting nowhere. A single bead of sweat fell silently down the side of his face. His nerves were getting the better of him.

“Detective Givens. Thank you for coming.” Destiny opened the front door. She remained in the shadows, darting her eyes back and forth into the night sky.

“Expecting someone?” Montana glanced over his shoulder.

She shook her head. “No. I just have one of those feelings.”
