“Bad luck? He broke his parole. How many chances do you think he deserves?”

I cock my head. “Would you abandon someone just because you think it might not turn out the way you want it to?”

“In a heartbeat.”

I point at him. “No, you wouldn’t.”

He grins the grin I grew up blushing over when I was in high school. I got over it—mostly. It’s still a pretty blush-worthy grin.

“Fine. Maybe I wouldn’t. But I’m a sworn officer of the law. I have to do my job no matter what I think about the person in my custody. You have options.”

“I’m not dumping him.” I go to sit on a bench along the wall of the bullpen to wait to meet with my client. It’s busy and noisy with the hum of multiple conversations going on. It’s quite a contrast to the relatively quiet courthouse. But I like it.

Link sits down next to me.

“Don’t you have criminals to chase down or laws to uphold?” I ask.

“Nope.” Rosie lays at his feet and he rubs her ears. “Have you given into Mitch yet?”

I turn to him. “How’d you…? No. I don’t date my co-workers.”

He smiles. “Is that the only reason?”

“Why do you care?”

“Just curious. It seems to me you’ve been flying solo for a while. Your last date was over three months ago.”

“How could you possibly know that?”

“I’m a cop. I have great investigative skills.”

I nudge him. “I think you’re just nosey.”

“I guess I’m that too.”

He gets up and goes to the coffee station across the room. There are several cops standing around it talking and he nudges his way in and pours himself a cup of coffee, then returns to the bench.

I glance at him. “Thanks.”

“For?”

“Offering to get me a coffee.”

He offers his cup to me.

I shake my head. “No thank you.”

Link laughs. “You’re a brat. Bratty Lyssie.” He takes a sip of coffee. “The reason I didn’t offer to pour you a cup is because it’s after eleven and you never drink coffee after eleven.”

I shake my head. “You think you know me so well?”

“I know that.” He gets to his feet. “Good luck with Mr. Unreliable.”

“Mitch?”

“No, your client.” He points at me. “So youarethinking about Mitch.”

“Go away please.”
