He shakes with me. “This is going to be a great Halloween.”
“Not so fast. You need to win the bet first.”
“I have no doubt that I will.”
“We’ll just have to see about that Officer Brandt.”

Igetgoodnewsfrom the vet, and I want to share it with Allyssa. So, I go to her office with Rosie on the off chance she might be there. After I explain to the receptionist that Rosie is a member of the police force and, therefore, allowed in the building, I head down the hall to Allyssa’s office. The door is open, so I send Rosie in first.
When I hear, “Rosie!” I go to the doorway and Allyssa smiles at me. “Hey, did you see the vet today?”
“Yes. Rosie is cleared to return to duty on Monday.” I smile.
Allyssa rubs Rosie’s ears. “Yay. That is good news, girl. I bet you’re ready.”
I laugh. “I know I am.” She stops petting Rosie and I call her back to me. Rosie comes over and sits next to me. “Are you free for lunch?”
“I can get away. Give me five minutes and I’ll meet you out front.”
“Okay.”
Rosie and I wait by the patrol car and Allyssa comes out a few minutes later. She looks at the car. “I’m not riding in your car.”
“I’ll turn on the siren.”
“Tempting, but no.”
“We can walk to that place down the street. Rosie is welcome there.”
“Okay.” She takes my arm, then lets go. “I guess that’s against protocol.”
“A little bit, yeah. I can take your arm. But then everyone will think you’re under arrest.”
“I’ll just walk next to you.”
We walk side by side down the sidewalk to the café on the corner. Rosie and I are greeted by the staff as we take a seat in the outside patio area. It’s a beautiful, clear day and I hope I get through lunch without being called off.
Allyssa sits across from me. “Are you ready for the big game?”
“I am. Have you had practice yet?”
“It’s tonight. And thanks to you, I can show them I deserve a place on the roster.”
“Yeah. You were hot on Sunday…or you know…”
She raises an eyebrow. “Hot, huh?”
I sigh. “You know what I mean.”
She grins then points at me. “You may just regret giving me baseball lessons.”
We order and I manage to make it through the meal without getting a call. But just as we’re finishing up, one comes in.
I stand and drop some money on the table.
