“We did. I was with a client. I’m ten minutes late. Why are you so grumpy?”

He points at me. “You lied to me.”

“About being here at one?” I take my seat.

“No. About the concert.”

“I went to the concert, Mark.”

“I know—with Link. You guys didn’t think I might want to come along?”

I shake my head and take a drink of water. “We didn’t go together. We ran into each other there and sat together.”

He leans back and studies me for a moment. “Hmm.”

“It’s the truth. I was with a colleague from work and he was with a fellow officer. We all sat together and the colleague and the officer ended up hitting it off.” I smile. “Link took me home.”

He raises an eyebrow. “You’ve been seeing him a lot lately.”

“Never intentionally. We run into each other.”

“Well then, you’ve been running into him a lot lately.”

I cock my head. “Why is that a problem?”

Mark scowls. “He’s my friend.”

I laugh. “Wow. Are you afraid I’m going to steal your boyfriend away from you?”

“No. I just wonder what’s going on.”

“Nothing is going on.”

Mark narrows his eyes, clearly skeptical of my answer, and takes a breath. “He said the PD beat the lawyers again.”

“They did. And thanks for showing up to support us.” I say, laying on the sarcasm.

He leans forward on the table. “I never know who to support. My best friend is a cop and my sister is a lawyer. It’s safer to stay away.”

“I played. And I did pretty good.”

“You played?”

“Yeah. Left field. And I got a hit.”

He grins. “Good for you.”

“Thank you.” Since he’s being so weird about me spending time with his bestie, I don’t want to tell him about spending two days at the park practicing with Link. Or the bet…

“We’re invited to dinner, by the way.”

“Dinner?”

“With Link at his parents’ house. You know they like to see us every once in a while.”

“When?”

“Saturday.”
