“You’re welcome.”

She glances at me. “Seriously, though, you need to smile more.”

“I’ll take that under advisement.”

“I like smiling. I’m a glass-half-full kind of girl.”

“You’re a primary school teacher. It’d be weird if you weren’t.”

“Is your full name Alexander?”

“It is.”

“I’m going to call you Alexander from now on.”

I stifle a sigh. “If you must.”

“I’m going to make it my mission in life to make you smile more.”

“Good luck with that.”

“I’m pretty good at cheering people up.”

My brows draw together. “After everything you’ve been through, it wouldn’t surprise me if you were the most miserable woman in existence.”

“Every cloud and all that.” She studies me for a moment. “Do you find me annoying?”

“No.”

“Irritating?”

“No.”

“Are you sure you don’t want to punch me in the face?”

That makes me laugh for the first time, and her eyes light up.

“I knew I could make you smile,” she states happily.

“Don’t tell anyone,” I scold. “I have a reputation to maintain.”

“It can be our little secret.” But her eyes continue to sparkle.

We cross the road and head back to Kia Kaha. I let us through the gate, and we climb the terrace steps and go back into my office.

“Right, let’s book Finn in,” I say, going over to my computer. “I’d say tomorrow, but Tyson’s getting married, so it’ll have to be Monday. What time is best for you?”

“I can make three-thirty on Monday.”

“Okay. Can I just double check, Finn’s surname is Taylor, right?”

“Yes, it’s his father’s surname. I’ve always been known by my maiden name at school, and I decided to stick with it.”

“Miss Missie Macbeth?”

She wrinkles her nose. “It does sound a bit ridiculous when you say it like that.”

“Not at all. I like it.”
