Me:What are you up to? Having another party?

Belle:Yeah, everyone’s here. We missed you two! But I hope you have a lovely time.

Me:Not long till your honeymoon!

Belle:No, I’m super-excited. It’s going to be a good year. Traveling across Europe, and then when we get back, did I tell you that I’m starting my own company doing parties for kids?

Me:No, you didn’t! Oh that’s fantastic!

Belle:Yeah, I was going to call it Winters’ Wonderland, but of course I’m a Chevalier now. I’m trying to think of names. I thought maybe The Magnificent Monroe, LOL.

Me:Oh, after your middle name!

Belle:Yeah, I thought it was funny!

Me:Oh, talking of which, Alex won’t tell me his!

Belle:Haha I’m not surprised. It’s Clint.

That makes me laugh out loud.

Me:It’s not too bad. I don’t know why he wouldn’t tell me.

Belle:You know what he’s like. Mr. Eastwood doesn’t exactly wear his heart on his sleeve. Anyway gotta go. Happy New Year!

Me:Yeah, Happy New Year xxxx

I put down the phone. Shifting onto my side, I pull the duvet up and look out at the view.

Something’s bothering me. I’ve heard the name Eastwood before.

Alex comes back into the room, and I look over my shoulder to discover he’s carrying our glasses, topped up with champagne, and a box of something under his arm.

He climbs on the bed, and I sit up, propping myself up against the pillows, and take my glass from him.

“Found some chocolates,” he says, putting the box between us. He opens it, revealing an array of gorgeous truffles.

“Mmm.” I choose one and bite it in half, sighing as it melts on my tongue. Then I have a sip of champagne, enjoying the blend of flavors.

I look out at the view again. The sea is the color of saffron in the late afternoon sun. The sky is a glorious blue, although there are clouds on the horizon, promising rain later.

I have the other half of the truffle and look at the two circles of melted chocolate on my thumb and forefinger.

Then it pops into my head. Where I’ve heard the name Eastwood before.

Alex is lost in thought, staring out at the view, but he smiles as I turn to look at him. When I don’t look away, he says, “What?”

I don’t say anything for a moment, thinking hard. I must be wrong. It doesn’t make sense.

“What?” he says again, amused.

“I had a text from Belle,” I say softly.

“Oh? How’s she doing?”

“Good. She told me that when she gets back from her honeymoon, she’s setting up a company doing parties for kids.”

“Yeah, she’s pretty good at it.”
