I know I had the same issue when I came to the palace.

Mesleeping in apalace!

Ha! Ridiculous!

And yet that was where I had found myself.

I threw the door open, the alarm still blaring outside.

Shouts issued up from down the corridor and further bellows clipped my heels as I hurried toward the stairs.

I got halfway down them when the chief of security, Oggen, held out a hand to stop me.

“What?” I said. “What is it?”

“Someone tripped the security system, Governor,” he said. “I’m afraid I can’t let you come downstairs until we apprehend whoever did it.”

“Can’t let me?”I snapped. “I’m the Governor and I’ll do what I damn well please!”

I marched down the steps, my thoughts on Layla.

What if she had been the one to accidentally trip the system?

I didn’t want her to come to any harm at the hands of my security detail who could be more aggressive than necessary at times.

Oggen spoke into his communication device on his forearm:

“Fhis, Ashar, please accompany the Governor in the palace—”

I whirled on him. “You willnotassign a detail on me! I can walk the corridors of my home by myself!”

Oggen did not back down and his expression only grew firmer. “Sir, it’s my responsibility to protect you. If anything should happen to you—”

I waved a hand at him. “Nothing is going to happen to me!”

And I descended the stairs and marched past a pair of officers who I assumed had to be Fhis and Ashar.

They locked eyes on Oggen, who nodded back at them.

They followed in my wake, making me growl.

I tapped at my communicator and called Layla but she didn’t answer.

NowI was beginning to grow concerned.

I didn’t care what happened to the things in the palace — they were owned by the natives of Enchor’s Heart anyway — but Layla was my guest, and it was my responsibility to keep her safe.

Please, by the Creator, tell me she’s unharmed and that the security systems were only triggered by some wild animal or one of the servants.

The servants stood to one side, watched over carefully by the security team.

They were dressed in their bedclothes and looked as shocked as I had when I had first awoken.

This made me growl and I made a mental note to berate Oggen and tell him that, in the future, none of the servants were toeverbe corraled like animals like this ever again.

They had worked here for years and if they were going to steal something, they would have done it already.

“Don’t worry, folks,” I told them. “There’s nothing to worry about. As soon as we get to the bottom of this, you’ll all be allowed to go back to your beds.”
