He Never Bent a Knee

Tabitha

The flashing of lights from the camera made my head spin.

"Is this a hospital or a fucking red carpet?" I asked, shielding my eyes.

"You know how much I love fancy things," Shawn answered. "It's a pleasure that you made it to my launch. How could I repay you?"

Shawn Michaels: a neurologist with a dream of getting a hospital more prominent than mine.

After all his fancy talk, I was expecting to see something grand. All he did was watch the local news station and some big shots, then called it a day. It was hardly anything interesting. The equipment he stashed was suitable for operations but subpar as compared to what I had in my newest hospital, and even my older one. The teams who run my health care business don't waste time.

"No need to repay me," I replied as I eyed his guests. "I'm only here because it's a formality."

We were done touring the facilities, but the guests seemed very interested in everything he had created. Each person to their preference, I guess.

"As a formersuitor, you meant to say," he corrected, as he took a step closer. "You forget that you and I have a very romantic history.”

Unfortunately, he wasn’t completely lying. The part about being my suitor was genuine, but the part about both of us having a romantic history was a lie.

He had tried desperately to get my attention, but it never worked. He was just like the rest of them – the spies sent from my father. In fact, Shawn had boldly told me that he wanted to be a shareholder at my new hospital. I refused, of course.

It wasn't hard to tell what my father's plan was: get a man to make me comfortable, hand over the hospital, and return to him. It was a stupid approach, but I couldn't help but acknowledge his genius.

"For your own sake and for the rest of the guests, I advise that you'd mind the way you talk to me for the rest of the night," I warned with a smile. "Even if you mean it as a joke."

I didn't miss the vein that popped out at the side of his head as he thought of different ways to hit me without getting into trouble. But he shook it off and forced a smile. "Enjoy the rest of your night, Dr. Hill."

"I will," I assured him as I watched him walk away.

In a way, he had asked me to leave as soon as possible. I sighed. Part of me regretted coming out for the event. I could have stayed home and continued enjoying my little toy.

"He'd already be home by now," I murmured as I checked my wristwatch.

"You seem frustrated," said a baritone, laced with the intent to hunt.

His voice sounded familiar, so I spun my head around and came face to face with his chest. I lifted my gaze to find him staring down at me, with the cockiest smile on his face. Something about him shook me, wherehave I seen you before?

The question that ran through my mind rendered me unable to answer the one he had prepared. It's not like there was anything about him that I hadn't seen in other men: broad shoulders, well-trimmed beard, eyes as brown as bear's fur, and arrogance…wait…his was different.

I don't know what it was, but my heart thumped hard. Even my pussy was tightening with excitement.

"Is everything all right?" he asked.

"I should be asking myself that question," I muttered. I had yet to have a drink that night, and I was sure that I wasn't intoxicated.

What exactly is going on?

"Did you say something?" he asked, stepping closer. I flinched. I jumped because a man stepped too close to me.

"Who the hell are you?" I asked, looking around to see if anyone noticed what had happened.

The stranger grinned. I don't know why, but it seriously set me off. It felt like he was intimidating me.

"Just a passerby," he replied. "You doing okay?" he asked, a hint of worry in his tone.

"I'm fine," I replied, finally regaining my composure. "Is this the part where you try to hit on me?"
