“You’re doing perfect, just whispering like this…I can feel his stabbing gaze,” she responded. “I wish I could see his face.

I looked at his face, and I worried about my safety. There was no way he was going to let me leave alive.

“I don't think he likes this,” I warned.

“It doesn't matter what he thinks,” she said.

“Don't you think you've been holding her long enough?” the man finally spoke up.

Oh, well. If the second hill mistress demands it.

“Oh, hi there,” I offered, counting my teeth with my tongue. “I'm Jerry.”

“Bruce, this is Jerry, a good friend,” she introduced me.

“I can see that,” Bruce replied, staring at my hands still on the hips.

I took my hands off immediately.

“I want to ask you some questions, though,” I turned my attention to Tabitha. “Are you busy right now?”

“No, I'm not,” she replied. “My office, please.”

I followed her to the office, and Bruce followed closely behind. I don't know why I found it exciting. Maybe it was because I had seen someone ready to fight for Tabitha.

Bruce

Once again, I wasn't jealous of anyone. I only followed along because I wanted to be a part of their conversation. My role as an assistant was to keep track of her dealings with patients.

“It's been a month since we last saw each other,” Jerry reminisced. “You never reached out to me again. On the flip side, I also didn't reach out to you.”

“I'm glad you also realized that you were at fault as well,” she said and smiled.

I was quiet, watching them as they caught up on things they might have been left out of. He knew a lot about her. Talked about her favorite food. Made recommendations for restaurants. He knew way too much, and I knew way too little.

He came for medical advice concerning a mutual friend. Afterward, Tabitha gave him the advice and prescriptions to text as the patient in question was not in Richmond. They continued to catch up, and I was forced to sit and listen to all of it.

“It's been great catching up,” Jerry said, finally concluding.

“It really has.” She got up and approached him. He got up for a hug, and they embraced.

“We can go grab dinner,” he suggested.

“She's not going anywhere.” I didn't even wait for her to give a response. The words ended up slipping right out of my mouth.

“It's just dinner,” Jerry defended. “If you want, you can come along with us.”

“I said, no.” I grabbed Tabitha’s hand and pulled her to my side, “She’s not going anywhere but here.”

We aren’t even dating. It shouldn’t matter who she went out with. My actual goal wasn’t to make her stay by my side. In fact, I could let them go together and probably sabotage her. Or, continue to increase the number of staff that like me. There are many things that I can do other than fall into an obvious trap.

There I was, holding her like she was my favorite toy that someone else was asking for a turn to play with. I placed her head against my chest. Something told me that the young man wasn’t kidding around anymore. If the earlier parts of the evening were to make me show off any jealous parts, it was different now.

Still on the high of nostalgia, he wanted to hang out with her, and there was no way I was going to allow that.

Jerry

To be honest, I didn’t think it through. While I was worried about him, my conversation with Tabitha had stirred up past memories, including the more intimate ones. A part of me wanted an opportunity to reenact them.
