“No lies there,” I agreed. “I'm sorry about that.”

“Don't apologize,” he commanded.

“I really did come to see her for genuine reasons,” I explained. “I needed her help with something.”

“You asked for help?” he smirked. “You?”

“Yeah? What's so bad about that?” I frowned and crossed my arms.

“Nothing at all,” he said as he gently tussled my hair.

I wanted to pull my head away. But I remembered what Helena had taught me. I actually enjoyed him playing with my hair. He stopped, and I opened my eyes. His hand was still on my head, and he looked surprised.

“What?” I asked, wondering if anything had happened while I had my eyes closed.

“I didn't expect you'd stay still,” he said with a satisfied grin. “You're really a good girl.”

“I am,” I agreed, “Thank you for the compliment.”

“Wow,” he chuckled. “Okay, that is different. What happened to you?”

“Nothing. Do you hate it?” I asked.

“No, I like it, actually,” he responded. “It feels nice to know that you aren't always alpha all the time.”

Helena was right. Being praised wasn't such a bad thing.

“I guess it's your turn to tell me what you're doing here,” I stammered.

“I came to volunteer,” he answered.

“Oh, I see,” I replied. “I noticed there was an opening for volunteers.”

“I would love to stay and chat, but I have a patient to get to,” he said. “You can join me, though.”

“All right then. Let's see you at work.”

Bruce felt like a different person from when he was at my hospital. The way the children lit up when they saw him made me envious. He talked to the parents like the children were his own, and they were co- parents with him, using phrases like:

Our son.

My daughter.

My boy.

Our girl.

The parents didn't seem to mind. Why would they? He handled their children like they were his, after all.

The female nurses swarmed him. I couldn't help feeling jealous.

“Who's the lady that keeps glaring at us?” one of them asked Bruce while pointing at me.

“That's Dr. Tabitha Hill,” Bruce introduced me. “I work with her in Richmond.”

“Oh, I've heard about her. She's the alpha, right?” another inquired.
