“Whoa. Hold on. Are you okay?” he asked, his tone full of concern but the amusement in his eyes pushing a scowl across my face.

“No… thanks to… you.” Another series of coughs erupted from my chest and I spit out salt water, resisting the urge to gag. Istruggled to get away from him and he laughed until he saw my face.

“I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“Well, you did!” I snapped, trying to get away from him but he wasn’t allowing it. “Don’t you ever do that again. I was terrified something had happened to you.” I was gasping for air at this point, hating the fact tears had formed in my eyes.

“Please, little lamb. I’m an excellent swimmer and know these waters like the back of my hand. I’m sorry. That was shitty of me to do.”

“Yes, it was. Damn you.”

Maddox smiled in a reassuring manner. “I said I was sorry and I meant it.”

“Okay,” I huffed, trying to tamp down the continuing trickles of fear. “What is it that you aren’t good at?”

He wrinkled his brow as he spun me around in the water three times. “Let me think. Nothing.”

“So modest. I don’t know how you stand yourself.”

“Oh, you might be surprised.”

While his playfulness had returned, I pushed both hands against his chest and he let me go. But as he reached for my hand, his expression changed dramatically. “You really are a bastard.”

“So I’ve been told. Come on. Let me show you Mother Nature’s beautiful artistic canvas.”

“Only if you promise not to tease me.”

“I won’t make promises I can’t keep. Come with me, Zoe. I don’t want to ask you again.”

Why was it that his dominating side thrilled me so much?

We both shoved our mouthpieces past our lips and he led me out into deeper water until I finally dipped my head just under the surface. The colors of fish and coral were more explosive than before, so enticing that I was instantly relaxed. He pointed out various objects, watching my eyes as they highlighted the joy I was experiencing.

The warm water and the peaceful moment lulled me into a moment of feeling safe, as if being with him meant nothing bad could ever happen. I wanted the moment to last, but I knew as with all good things, they would soon be forced to come to an end.

He never let go of me, swimming as if in a practiced orchestration as we moved through the calm water. He pointed out various corals and fish, finally making hand signs as if he expected I’d know what he was indicating.

The time we spent with our heads nearly under water was some of the happiest moments I’d felt in a long time. I was relaxed, able to concentrate on breathing and enjoying the moment, basking in the sun and gorgeous colors of the ocean.

When we finally surfaced, I was shocked to see the sun had changed positions in the sky dramatically. I was giddy inside, immediately laughing as I yanked the mask down, blinking beads of water from my eyes. “That was incredible. So incredible.”

He gave me a boyish grin, winking after removing his mask and before I knew what I was doing, I rushed toward him. I threwmy arms around his neck, tangling my fingers in his wet hair, even daring to wrap one leg around him. In a shocking moment, I involuntarily pressed my lips against his. His body reacted almost instantly, his thick cock pressing into my stomach, his lips opening mine. We were both on fire, so much so that I was certain we’d combust, the electricity we shared more powerful than before.

I remained breathless, the longing sparking something that I knew would never end.

But only a few seconds later, his body tensed as it had done before.

Suddenly, we were reminded at the same time that what we’d shared was forbidden on one too many levels and both our bodies stiffened.

I backed away first, looking away as I treaded water, refusing to allow him to see how embarrassed I’d become. “I’m sorry. I was caught up in the moment.”

“Mmm… do you see the shore over there?” Maddox asked from behind me, pointing over my shoulder.

“Yes.” The small cove was exquisite, seductively tropical with palm trees and other thick foliage surrounding the perimeter. It appeared vacant, untouched, reminding me of an episode ofLost. As soon as my mind drifted to the television show from years before, a sudden shiver coursed down my spine. There’d been secrets galore on the show, murders and mysterious disappearances going unexplained. Crazy thoughts entered my mind about Maddox dumping bodies of former enemies in shallow graves in the dense forest.

I rolled my eyes, tensing as I felt his presence getting closer, the warm water lapping over my arms as I floated on the surface as if riding on a pocket of air.

“Swim to the shore for me and wait on the beach.”
