I frown, not sure what she’s getting at. But before I can ask, the elevator doors close between us, and I’m left alone in the hallway.

Shaking my head, I dismiss the woman’s words as the ramblings of an elderly neighbor. I don’t have time for cryptic messages; I have work to do.

I rush to my apartment door and put my key in, but the door is already unlocked.

“Weird,” I mutter. In my rush to get out of here, I must have neglected to lock it.

I push the door open, but as soon as I step inside, I hear something coming from the bedroom.

I freeze. Dan said he was going to his desk at the coworking space this morning. Did he come back home?

Or is someone else in the apartment? An intruder?

I stay where I am, trying to decide what to do. And then I hear it.

A low moan. Coming from the bedroom.

My stomach drops.

“Dan?” I call out, taking a step closer to the bedroom.

The moaning stops, and I hear movement inside. Panic sets in as I realize that there’s someone else in there with him. My mind races as I try to come up with an explanation, but I already know what’s happening.

I push the door open, my eyes widening in horror at the sight before me. Dan is in bed with another woman, both of them tangled in the sheets. The woman looks up at me, a bemused expression on her face, while Dan looks like a deer caught in headlights.

“Erin,” Dan blurts out. “This isn’t what it looks like.”

“It isn’t?” I glare at him, red spots swimming in my vision. “It looks like you’re my boyfriend, in bed with another woman.”

The woman pulls the sheets tighter around herself, looking like she’s trying not to laugh.

My hands curl into fists. She’s probably getting a kick out of this. Who knows, maybe breaking up relationships is how she gets her kicks.

But I don’t care. Whoever she is, she’s not my problem. She’s not the one who’s betraying my trust and cheating on me.

Tears fill my eyes, and I blink them away, not wanting Dan to see me cry.

“It’s a one-time thing.” Dan grabs his pants and yanks them on. “I swear.”

He reaches for me, but I recoil from his touch. What the neighbor said suddenly makes sense. She must have seen the woman come into our apartment.

Or maybe she’s seen it happen in the past. I don’t believe Dan at all when he says it’s a one-time thing. Why would I?

He has the decency to look ashamed, but even that isn’t enough to help me right now.

I don’t want to be here for this. I don’t want to hear his excuses. I don’t need to hear any more lies.

“I expect you to be out by the time I get home tonight.” I grab my purse from the wardrobe I left it on.

His eyes widen. “Tonight? You can’t—”

“Yes, I can. The lease is in my name. Goodbye, Dan. I hope you’re happy together.”

And then I turn and leave. I don’t check to see what Dan does, and I don’t care what he says. This relationship is over.

I can’t believe I was stupid enough to fall for his act. I can’t believe I let myself believe he cared about me.

I’m such an idiot.
