I’m suddenly struck by how much I want to be closer to him. To feel the warmth of his body against mine. I don’t know if it’s the alcohol or just the way he’s looking at me, but I feel like I could kiss him right here in this bar and it would be the most natural thing in the world.

“It’s your turn to ask me,” Josh says suddenly.

“Huh?”

“Ask me truth or dare.”

“Oh.” I shake my head. That’s right. I forgot all about the game. “Truth or dare?”

“Dare,” he says with a mischievous grin.

I rack my brain for a good dare, something that’ll let me see a new side of him or make us both laugh. Instead, my mind just lands on daring him to do the one thing I want most in the world.

“I dare you to kiss me,” the words tumble out of my mouth before I can stop them.

Maybe this is crazy. Yes, I know that. I’ve never been impulsive like this before, but something about him makes me feel alive in a way I haven’t in a long time.

His eyes widen in surprise, but he doesn’t hesitate. He leans across the table and presses his lips to mine. It’s like an explosion goes off in my body as his mouth moves hungrily against mine. His hands come up to cup my face as his tongue darts into my mouth, exploring every inch that’s to be found.

We’re lost in each other, the world around us fading away until it’s just us and the thrill of this new connection we’ve made.

Eventually, we break apart, panting and grinning at each other like teenagers who’ve just snuck their first kiss. But there’s a heat between us that’s undeniable, something that goes beyond mere attraction. As we stare at each other, I can see myself reflected in his eyes, and it’s like he’s peeling back all the layers of me until he sees me for who I really am.

“What was that?” he asks softly, his hand still resting against my cheek.

“I’m not sure,” I admit, feeling a little dazed. “But it felt good.”

He chuckles and leans back, running a hand through his hair. “Yeah, it did.”

We sit in silence for a few more moments, both lost in thought. There’s so much between us now, so much potential for something more. But is it worth the risk? Is it worth throwing caution to the wind and diving headfirst into this uncertainty?

As I look into Josh’s bright blue eyes, I know that I want to take that risk. I want to let go of my reservations and let him lead me down a path of exploration and passion. I want to discover all the things that make him tick, all the things that make him unique and special.

“I don’t want to play this game anymore,” I say, my voice low and sultry. “At least not here.”

He raises an eyebrow. “Where do you want to go instead?”

We look into each other’s eyes, and I can tell he’s thinking the same thing. We should take a trip back in time and go to the place where this all started.

Without a word, he stands, offers his hand, and leads me out into the warm and promising night.

CHAPTER 15

JOSH

In order to get to Fletcher’s Pond at night, you have to park on a side road called Cypress Way and sneak in through the woods. Technically, the land is closed after dark, though that’s never kept anyone out.

Hand in hand, Erin and I walk through the trees. An owl hoots close by, and another one responds.

There’s a crackling energy between us, and where she’s touching me nearly burns from the heat of my desire.

We reach the clearing, and the moon is shining bright overhead. The pond looks like a sheet of glass, and the trees cast long shadows across the ground. It’s been years since I’ve been here, but nothing has changed.

“When was the last time you were here?” Erin asks.

I don’t even have to think about it. “Graduation night.”

“What?” Even in the dark, I can feel her intense gaze on me.
