“Good.” His thumb rubs circles over my lower back.

Looking at his face, I see a question in his eyes. What do you want?

I don’t have to ask what he means. I know that much is also clear on my face.

Does he feel the same way? Or am I just being ridiculous?

I decide the best approach is probably to go on the offense.

Swallowing, I take a deep breath. “Josh…”

“Yeah, baby?” His grin is already there, and my heart flutters.

Baby. Before this trip, I never thought of myself as someone who would enjoy being called that… but I’m not here to analyze that now. Not when my heart could fly out of my throat with nerves at any moment.

“I liked last night,” I say.

“I did too.” He hooks his finger under my chin. “And I want more of it. I know that you live all the way in San Antonio, but I—”

“Yes,” I quickly say, nearly bouncing on my heels. “I want that too. I don’t care that it would be long distance. I want— I want to see where this goes.”

He brings his head down to kiss me. His lips are gentle on mine at first, but then his passion takes over and his tongue swirls against my teeth as he drags me closer to him.

My body aches to take things further, but we’re out in the open and he’s working, so I force myself to step away.

“Come back for dinner?” he asks, holding onto my hand as I take slow steps backwards. “At six?”

“I’d love to.” Finally, I’m too far away for us to hold hands anymore, and my fingers slip from his.

I walk for my car, but I can feel his gaze on me with every step, feel the promise of a new opportunity building here. I don’t know what will happen between us, but I’m taking a chance and I’m proud of myself for it.

As soon as I’m at the end of the ranch’s driveway, I do what any sane woman does in this situation. I call my best friend.

“Hey,” Riley answers.

“I just spent the night at Josh Humphries’ house.”

I don’t know what reaction to expect, but it’s certainly not the laughter she bursts into. “Of course you did,” she says between giggles.

I laugh as well. “What? Why are you saying ‘of course’?”

“Because I can practically see the future. Didn’t I say you would have a romp with a sexy cowboy while you were in town?”

“Um, I’m pretty sure you didn’t say those exact words.” Shaking my head, I leave Josh’s last acres alongside the road behind. Even though I just left his place, tonight’s dinner can’t come fast enough.

“And it was more than a romp.” I bite into my smile. “We talked about the fact that I live all the way in San Antonio, and we both still want to go for it.”

“Oh… my… God. How on earth did this happen?”

I shake my head. “I don’t know. We just keep being around each other, and it… it happened.”

“This is insane. I’m so freaking happy for you.”

“Thanks.” I smile even broader.

“You sound like you’re in love.”

That makes me pause. Am I in love?
