Taking her hand in mine, I lead her out to the kitchen. I asked the boys to fill in for me this morning so that I can have extra time with Erin, and I don’t want to waste a moment of it. I don’t want to think about my dad or even my animal sanctuary idea right now.

I want to be here, lost in this woman.

The future will come, and I’ll take the path there one step at a time. Until then, I intend on enjoying every second.

CHAPTER 20

ERIN

“May I have this dance?” Josh extends his hand to me, and all I can do is laugh.

“What?” His eyes twinkle, and behind him the bar is awash with dancers and twinkling lights.

Tonight marks three weeks that I’ve been in Fort Williams, and I couldn’t be happier.

I take his hand, and he leads me to the dance floor. We sway to the music, and I feel like I’m in a dream.

Josh is everything I’ve ever wanted in a man — kind, strong, and caring. Being with him feels so natural, like we’ve known each other forever.

As we dance, I can feel his eyes on me, and I look up to meet them. In that moment, I know that I’m falling for him. Hard.

He leans down to whisper in my ear. “I know this may be too soon, but I can’t help but feel like you’re the one for me.”

My heart skips a beat. “I feel the same way.”

Josh smiles, and we continue to dance, lost in our own little world.

After the song ends, we retreat to a quiet corner of the bar, holding each other close. With his warm breath on my neck and his strong arms around me, I never want to let go.

Shuffling closer to him, I look up into his blue eyes. “I feel like we’ve been in our own world.”

He chuckles and smooths his thumb down my cheek. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Lacing my fingers through his, I drink him in. It’s so weird. I feel like I’m a completely different person than I was a month ago. My life in San Antonio, especially the parts that I shared with Dan, feels like it took place in another lifetime.

“It’s a little crowded in here.” Josh pulls me closer.

“Then let’s step outside.” I lead the way, pulling him through the crowd and out back.

The night sky is filled with stars, and the air is cool against our skin as we step out of the bar. Josh wraps his arms around me from behind and kisses the back of my neck.

I shiver in delight. Being with Josh feels like home, and I’m grateful for every moment we have together. As we stand there, wrapped in each other’s arms, I know that I want to be with him forever.

The bar door is cracked open, and a new song starts, nearly as loud out here as it is inside.

“May I have another dance?” Josh asks.

I laugh and nod, and he moves us across the grass. It’s even better out here, just him and me, dancing under the big open sky.

As the song ends, he dips me low, and I laugh, my hair brushing the ground. When he brings me back up, I’m breathless, and he takes advantage of the moment to kiss me deeply.

I can feel his appreciation for me in every touch, every caress.

We pull away slightly, and I rest my forehead against his, our breaths mingling.

“You ready to get out of here?” he asks.

I’m more than ready. I can’t wait to be alone with him, to have nothing and no one else distracting us from each other.
