Page 86 of Brutal King

I must tell Marco. At least it would lessen the sting of my decision.

The Kings weren’t my enemies anymore. They never had been.

The sharp squeal of my phone on the nightstand sends me reaching for the cell before it wakes Maisy. She stirs beside me as I scan the screen. It’s not even seven yet. Who is calling me at this hour?

The shriek of sirens wailing escalates my pulse, and I answer the unknown number.

“Naughty, naughty, Mr. Rossi.” A familiar voice croons on the line. “All this time, I’ve wondered where my little Maisy had gone, and now I’ve found her in your bed.”

“Jasper?” I hiss, unable to keep from blurting his name out loud. “Where the fuck are you?”

“None of your concern, traitor.”

An incoming call diverts my attention as Max’s name lights up the screen. I press the call ignore button as Maisy’s lids flutter, and her sleepy gaze turns toward me.

“I suggest you turn yourself in to the authorities, Mr. Whitaker, because when I get my hands on you, I’m going to rip your lying tongue out and give it to Maisy as a present. You held this woman’s heart, had the gift of her love and you squandered it. You warped it and abused it, until you made her believe your lies. You made her feel unworthy, and now, I will make you pay for that.”

“If you can find me.” The line goes dead.

Rage billows up in my gut, expanding as I take in the fear in Maisy’s eyes.

I pull her into my chest and hold her tight against me. “You never have to be afraid again, little fox. I’m going to end this, I swear.”

The steady howl of the sirens sounds closer, but I can barely hear them over the thundering frenzy of my pulse. My phone rings again, and I nearly send it to voicemail until I see Max’s name once more.

“What?” I shout into the speaker.

“Uh, sorry to call so early boss, but there’s been a fire in the garage. Your cars are scorched.”

“Merda,” I grit out. “That little mother fucker.” My nose twitches, the thick scent of smoke cloying. Every remaining nerve ending across my back riots at the dark memories.

“What’s going on?” Maisy cries.

“Fucking Jasper must have had Dante surveilled, and when we went over there today, he probably saw us. He must have followed us home and torched my cars.”

A sharp gasp curves her mouth into a capital O.

“I need to go downstairs and deal with the authorities.” Releasing her, I slide to the end of the bed.

“I’ll go with you.”

“No, I don’t want you anywhere near this, Maisy.” I spear my legs through a pair of sweatpants and tug a shirt over my head. “Jasper is probably nearby watching the whole thing. The last thing I need is him getting exactly what he wants. You.”

A tremor races down her back, forcing her shoulders to shudder. Dio, I hate seeing her like this. I’m going to kill that motherfucker.

Tugging her into my chest once more, I press a kiss to her trembling lips. “I’ll be right back. There’s a guard at the door, so you’ll be safe.”

She nods and sits back on the bed, pulling the comforter up to her chin. “Hurry.”

As I ride down to the garage on the elevator, I shoot a quick message to Marco. He’s probably still asleep, but he needs to know what’s going on with Jasper. The moment I settle this arson report with the cops, I’m heading out to find that asshole myself. Forget the end of the week. I’ll have Jasper’s head on a platter before morning.

No one fucks with my cars.

And to set them on fire? It’s almost as if he were familiar with my dark history.

To my surprise, Marco answers my text immediately.

Marco: I’ll meet you downstairs in a minute.
