‘I don’t know. I think I’d like it to.’ Jack had never discussed a woman with his father before and he smiled at the new experience. ‘And what are you going to do about Nicole?’

His father shook his head. ‘I’m not sure.’

‘Well, don’t waste time. You’re not getting any younger.’

Kent picked up a peanut, lobbed it at his son’s head. Jack opened his mouth just in time and deftly caught the morsel. He winked at his father, delighted to see this other man emerge at last, a man he respected wholeheartedly.

Kent got to his feet. ‘Come on.’

‘Where are we going?’ Jack followed suit as his father left the room, picked up his coat from the coat stand in the hallway.

‘We’re going to go get our women!’
