‘A saturated solution! That’s what it was.’ Lisa smiled, pleased with the fact she had remembered. Generally during Mr Whitworth’s lessons, she, Flick and Nathan sat at the back, near the jars of bloated pickled creatures, playing with the Bunsen burner taps. Butthey did join in when it was time to do experiments, so some things had obviously stuck.
‘That’s it, that’s how I feel sometimes. I’m verging on being a saturated solution, and if more keeps being added, if more gets stirred into the pot, well, then I’ll combust.’
Lisa couldn’t help the giggle that escaped her. ‘I think you’re mixing your experiments there.’
‘Oh, you get the bloodyidea.’ Felicity laughed despite the tears that rolled down her face. She wiped them away with the soggy tissue still bundled in her hand.
‘Flick, you know you’re a great mum, don’t you? And you can take time for yourself. It’s completely understandable.’
‘I know. Thank you.’ Felicity hugged Lisa, clearly grateful for her reassuring words. As she leaned back from their embrace, she pickedup the pregnancy test. ‘Now. Let’s get you sorted.’
Lisa felt her stomach flip. ‘It’s probably going to be negative. I’m sure I’m being silly. We’ve been careful.’
‘My recent research suggests only abstinence is one hundred per cent—’
‘Ha! No. We certainly haven’t been abstinent.’
Felicity laughed. ‘Sure about that, are you?’
Lisa’s cheeks flushed at how quickly she’d jumpedin to say it.
Felicity grinned, raised her eyebrows and passed the test to Lisa. ‘So let’s do this.’
Having done the test, replaced the cap and left it on the side in the en-suite bathroom, Lisa joined Felicity back in the bedroom. While Felicity clock-watched, Lisa paced the room. She sat on the bed, looked at the pile of ironing, trying to determine whose clothes were whose, stood backup and looked out of the window.
‘It’s time.’ Felicity gave her a smile. ‘Why don’t you go and look.’
‘No. I can’t. You.’
Felicity stood up. ‘Sure?’
Lisa nodded her head. ‘Sure.’
Felicity walked back into the room, holding the test. Her face unsure and her eyes brimming with tears once more. ‘Congratulations, Lisa. It’s positive.’
Lisa looked at her, stunned; she was pregnant.PREGNANT!The word rushed round her mind as she absorbed Felicity’s congratulations. Nobody had congratulated her on being pregnant with Pip. To be fair she had only told Ben, but this time around, hearing ‘congratulations’ at the same moment as she learnt she was pregnant was overwhelming. She flopped on to the bed. ‘I’m pregnant.’ Happy sobs escaped her. ‘It’s Nathan’s. I’m pregnant with NathanBaker’s baby.’
‘The amount of times I thought you were going to tell me that when we were teenagers.’ Felicity laughed as she joined Lisa with the release of happy tears.
Lisa giggled, releasing some of her earlier tension. ‘Sorry to have kept you waiting.’
‘I’m sure it will be worth the wait.’ Felicity smiled.
