My mother touched my hand.

“Of course it will because my family will be with me,” she said with a smile. “I have to go in early for a few things. Be sure you’re ready by eight.”

“Alright, babe,” said Daddy.

The two pecked each other and I rolled my eyes, turning away from the gross display of affection. The green monster of envy was returning. When my mother had disappeared out the front door, Daddy came around the counter and took my hands in his. My eyes were wide while he looked into mine, the colors from last night coming in faded waves. I had nearly forgotten about our interaction in the bathroom. Or was that just a dream?

“It’s going to be difficult, but I want you to relax. We can’t let her know what we do,” he explained.

“I don’t understand. Why me?” I asked, remembering how much confusion this had caused.

“Because I can’t afford to fool around with anyone in LA,” he replied. “Our friends are intermingled and they like to talk. I want to stay married to your mother without any issues.”

I shook my head.

“I still don’t understand, Dallas. This is so strange to me. I’ve never experienced anything like it. It feels wrong,” I said.

He squeezed my hands.

“I know,” he said while leaning in close to my lips. “But it feels so good too,” He smirked.

While his lips mingled with mine, the desire to have him inside me again grew stronger. I yanked away from him and covered my mouth. What if my mother had walked back in during our little kiss? I looked over at the kitchen door, anticipating her figure to come through at any moment. Nothing happened.

“What?” he asked.

“I’m just afraid we’ll get caught,” I replied.

Dallas shook his head.

“She’ll never know. Now eat up so we can go get you a gown,” he said.

It was difficult to swallow my food, but I managed to eat the rest of my eggs without too much of a fuss. I smothered the strange mixture of feelings and reminded myself to go with the flow. Come on, Maddy, I thought to myself. It’s not like you’re getting married. Chill.

My anxiety faded as we headed into town where Dallas took me to an upscale dress boutique that specialized in unique dresses. I was overwhelmed by the amount of dresses available. Each one was made of high quality fabric that felt delicate between my fingers, handling every piece like it was a porcelain doll. One of the store clerks approached and asked if I wanted to try one of them on.

“You have a lovely figure for this one,” she said as she took it down from the rack. “What’s your size?”

“Oh, uh…” I trailed off, unsure of what to say.

“She’s a five,

” said Dallas.

I sighed with relief. The clerk walked us over to the dressing rooms and asked if there were any other dresses I wanted to try.

When I hesitated, Dallas said, “I found a few that would be lovely.”

The clerk nodded with a smile and let me into one of the rooms in the middle of the long hall. After she closed the door, I stared at the mirror covering the wall and admired the way my hair hung down over my shoulders. The dress I had chosen was a bright yellow, reminding me of the sunflowers that grew near the farm. I never plucked them from the root because they were simply too beautiful to kill. The lush fabric was silky and made me think of their luscious petals; how soft they felt in my fingers as I rubbed them.

I stripped my clothes and piled them on the chair before pulling the dress over my head, marveling at my reflection. It was a strapless gown covered in glittering gold flakes that shined like stars. I turned to admire the back, realizing I would need some help with the corset-style lacing. A knock came from the door. That must be Dallas. I cracked it open to peek outside, noticing the large selection of dresses he had hanging over his arm.

“Let’s see it,” he said.

“I need help with the back,” I informed him as I carefully opened the door.

I turned to let him tie the strings, watching his face in the mirror as he concentrated to make it perfect. He turned me back around so I could see the way it was tied.

“It’s cute, but the yellow makes your hair blend in. I think you should go with a darker color,” he said, digging through the choices he had collected.
