“Yeah so, Trip’s right. We need to remain smart and also vigilant. We said it before and we’ll repeat it as much as we need to. We can’t get sloppy and we also need to expect some backlash from them,” Judge added. “Those motherfuckers are too fuckin’ stupid to know when to quit.”

“I mean, we could let them strike first and if the feds don’t come outta the woodwork, then we know they’re not payin’ attention,” Rev suggested.

“It’s a risk either way. Either we finally get that war we thought was comin’ ’til the feds stepped in or we end up casualties of the feds,” Trip told them. “We gotta protect ourselves from the Shirleys but we also gotta protect ourselves from the feds. Two sides of the same damn coin.”

“All of those hillbilly goat fuckers,” Sig said, “need to die a slow fuckin’ torturous death.”

“By chokin’ on their own severed dicks,” Easy said with a smirk. “That was badass, Sig. But I still got nightmares about that. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night just to make sure my dick’s still attached.”

Dodge was pretty sure they all did. Those who didn’t witness it firsthand, heard about it in great detail. Definitely the stuff of nightmares.

“If they strike first and the feds don’t show themselves, that means we can do what we need to do how we need to do it,” Shade spoke up in the deliberate way he normally talked, picking each word carefully.

The longer he lived with Chelle, the faster his speech became but it was still slower than normal. Dodge had no idea why being with Chelle made a difference, but it was an obvious change. Maybe it had to do with his ol’ lady being a school librarian.

Dodge didn’t know or care because either way, it wasn’t his business. Shade probably had the most secrets out of all his brothers and that was okay with him. He was just glad that the quiet, but deadly, man with the long, curly hair was on their side. The man had crazy-ass knife skills that all the rest of them envied.

“Still risky but a risk we might have to take,” Trip answered.

“Say we wipe out all the mouth breathers up there? Then what? It’s possible they’ll just keep comin’ ‘cause their goal is to breed and increase their numbers. When the fuck will it all end? Will we never be able to live in peace?” Cage asked. “Will our families never be safe? Are we always gonna have to fuckin’ worry about our most vulnerable? Our women and children?”

“Best bet would be to blow up that fuckin’ mountain so there’s nothin’ left for them to go back to,” Sig growled. “Then they’d have no choice but to move the fuck on.”

“Yeah, easy, right?” Trip’s question was sharp with sarcasm. “Simply get our hands on enough ammonium nitrate to blow that motherfuckin’ hill to smithereens. Even purchasin’ a small amount of explosives will get law enforcement sittin’ up and takin’ notice. And, anyway, we’d need more than the amount used to blow open a hole large enough for a tunnel through the side of a mountain. One, we could never afford it, and two, nobody here knows how to handle that shit. It ain’t like just lightin’ a fuckin’ fuse. So, let’s get back to reality and think of a real solution.”

“If we burn it down, they’ll just rebuild. If we kill them all, they’ll just breed more elsewhere and possibly return to that mountain. So, is there any real solution?” Deacon asked.

Trip dropped his head and rubbed at his forehead under the brim of his ball cap.

Dodge got it. It had to be frustrating as all fuck to try to keep everyone safe. Trip was doing his best to protect his “family” from a crazy motherfucking clan of inbreds who were too stupid to know not to go back to the scene of their previous crime.

Dodge hated to think about it, but having the feds handle them might be the best bet. But if the Shirleys ended up laying low for a while and not doing anything illegal, not giving the feds a reason to haul them off that mountain again, then what?

They were a threat to the Fury no matter what.

Dodge did not want to be in Trip’s boots. No way, no how. No one else did, either. They all relied on the man to lead them and to make the right decisions.

Now that Stella was knocked up, it had to have created more pressure on the man.

The whole issue with the Shirleys all stemmed back to Sig finding Red on that mountain in the condition she was found. Would any of them have done anything different? Probably not. Sig saved Red’s life and saved Levi’s life, too. In turn, Red saved Sig’s life.
