“If we burn it down, we know it’s gone forever,” Mrs. Barnes said. “They’ll not care to come back to ashes.”

“What about Flynn’s wishes?” I asked. “Will he fight you on this?”

“His wife will make sure he understands exactly where we all stand on this issue,” Lord Barnes said. “She’s madder than a hornet.”

“Between you and me, Viktor, she was scary.” Mrs. Barnes lips twitched in a momentary show of her usual good sense of humor. “Who knew little Shannon Cassidy would grow up to be so fierce?”

“That’s what love does to a person,” I said.

“True enough,” Lord Barnes said.

“After breakfast, we’re going to see Flynn,” Mrs. Barnes said. “We’re going to tell him exactly what’s going to happen.”

“Who will meet with Rossi and Chetta?” I asked. “For that matter, how do we get in touch with them?”

“I’ll take care of that,” Lord Barnes said.

Fear thumped my chest. Lord Barnes, as respectable and impressive as he was, might not be a match for thugs. What if they didn’t want to take our offer? What then?
