Reluctantly, I loosen my hold on her. She releases the lock of her legs, and they fall to the floor.

She pushes against me to create space, but I stay mounted to the spot.

“Look at me, Ansley,” I demand.

She takes a deep breath and looks up into my eyes. Hers are cold and indifferent.

I lost her. The moment is gone.

“Back up,” she requests.

I do as she asked, and she quickly skirts around me and goes into the living area.

“Thanks for the help, but I think you need to go.”

“Why?” I ask.

“Because I can’t do this with you,” she bellows.

For some reason, the pain in her voice spurs me forward, and I wrap my arms around her again.

It feels right. Holding her. I know I should leave her be, but since talking to Weston about her this morning, all I could think about was seeing her again.

She’d made it quite clear that she wanted nothing to do with me, and yet, tonight, I found myself driving into the valley and to Market Square in hopes of running into her. I never intended to kiss her. I just wanted to be close to her.

It might make me an asshole, but I aim to do it again.
