“I’m still here, so I guess it ended in my favor,” I tell her.

She laughs.

I nudge Morris forward.

“This is my baby brother, Morris,” I introduce them.

She blinks up at him.

“Yeah, I think we have a class together,” she says.

“Business Law 210,” he confirms.

I look at her name tag.

“Vanda—that’s a pretty name.”

Morris cuts his eyes to me, and I elbow him in his ribs.

“We should get coffee after class one day,” he says nervously, “or before. We can compare notes or something.”

She smiles. “I’d like that.”

“You would?” he asks, and I clear my throat. “I mean, great.”

She finishes our transaction and hands him the bag with the correct joists.

“I wrote my number on the back of the receipt. Text me,” she says.

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Nice to meet you, Garrett. My mom is going to freak out when I tell her.”

Ouch.

“Tell her I said hello,” I say before we exit the store.

“See how easy that was,” I tell him once we are back in the truck.

“I can’t believe she said yes.”

“A little advice: a girl can’t say yes if you never ask a question. Remember that.”

“Got it.”

He has a stupid grin on his face the rest of the evening.

When we make it back to the festival grounds, Morris takes the bag to Graham.

Graham pulls out the joists to inspect them, and Morris snatches the receipt and runs off.

“What’s gotten into him?” Graham asks.

I shake my head. “He has a date,” I say.

“I’m worried about that boy. I don’t think he could touch a titty without falling head over heels.”

I laugh.

To be young again.
