Beth felt sorry for Freya. She couldn’t imagine having to spend time with the woman. After a glance at everyone, it seemed like they thought it was normal because they continued eating and talking.

Alastair gripped her hand. “I’m sorry. I should have warned you.”

“I’m just sorry I’ve upset anyone.”

He lifted her hand and kissed her knuckles. “You haven’t. Now, eat your breakfast.”

After breakfast, she went up to Angus’s room and stayed there most of the day and even ate lunch with him. She tried to talk him into eating his meals in the dining room with the family, but he talked about not being ready.

They got into a routine that Beth enjoyed. There was a time after dinner when the family sat in a living room and had after-dinner drinks that she was able to get to know everyone. All except Una. She always stayed on the other side of the room, glaring at them all.

Beth almost felt sorry for her. Freya was the polar opposite. She always had a sweet smile on her face. Beth loved it when she came to Angus’s room to watch them play chess or eat lunch with them. She could tell they both cared deeply for each other.

Beth wondered if Freya reminded Angus of his first wife. Since they were sisters, she assumed they looked a lot alike. She was told Freya moved in with them after her husband was killed. She had two small boys and needed help. They were fortunate to have her because her sister died in childbirth soon after she moved in, so she was able to help with the baby.

Beth’s life was becoming something she never dreamed possible, and with a man she was falling in love with.
