Wes

Finnwasadeadman. I had no doubt he’d been dancing with Audrey just to piss me off, but it worked. I was pissed. That was not how I wanted to approach Audrey after the way I left things Saturday night, and I sure as shit didn’t want her to look at me like I was just some idiot Neanderthal who wanted to club her over the head and drag her out of the bar. The fact that I’d flung her over my shoulder and carried her out of the bar was not helping my case.

As soon as we got outside, I set her to her feet. Dark gray clouds gathered over her head as she shoved me in the chest, sending a surge of her power through me that sparked the lightning in my hand. Her eyes were bright with anger, and if I wasn’t mistaken, a touch of arousal. I reminded myself it was just her magic turning her on.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” She pushed her hair out of her face, swatting at the loose strands. “Everyone in there saw my ice, by the way, so good going.”

“I don’t care if they saw your ice. Half them are here to see magic, and the other half better get used to it because they’re going to see a lot more of it soon enough.”

Her face screwed up in agitation, and goddamn it, I wanted to kiss her. Just touching her hand after days without contact nearly sent me over the edge, and it had nothing to do with the magic between us. That was all Audrey. She had no idea the kind of power she had over me. If she told me to light myself on fire, I’d reach for the nearest match.

“Stop looking at me like that. I’m mad at you.” She hugged her chest, pushing up those perfect tits. We weren’t even touching now, but her nipples poked through her shirt, hard enough to cut glass. Good to know she wasn’t completely immune to me outside of her magic, either.

My fingers itched to grab her, push her up against the wall, and bury my cock inside her until she made those soft little whimpers that let me know she was about to come. But I didn’t bring her out here to do any of that. “You can stay mad at me, but we’re still going to talk.”

“It’s been three days, Wes.” She shoved me again, but with a lot less heat behind it. The quick edge of her temper had started to cool, which wasn’t necessarily a relief. I knew just how long her anger could simmer at a low boil. “Where have you been?”

“I wanted to give you time.” A group of laughing tourists stumbled out of the bar. I shot them all death glares, which sobered a few of them up pretty quickly. Taking Audrey’s arm, I led her to the side of the building, to an enclosed walkway that opened to the beach on the other side.

She shook me off. “I would’ve forgiven you if you’d come by on Sunday, but now, I’m not so sure. The few days I’ve had without you around to bother me have been nice.”

“Liar.” I walked the word down her spine and smiled when she shivered. “I think you’ve missed me a hell of a lot more than you want to let on.”

She lifted that stubborn chin I loved so much and stared me down. “Like I said, if you’d come by on Sunday, I might’ve forgiven you. But it’s too late now.”

“Forgiven me for what?”

I tensed, muscle gripping bone. So much was riding on her ability to let go of the past. While she could forgive me for a thousand meaningless infractions, if she didn’t forgive me for telling Seth to leave the island without her, none of this mattered. Until she let me in, all the way, she had no hope of using her magic properly. And I had no hope of ever making her mine.

She gave me a funny look. “For ditching me in the woods on Saturday and ignoring me since. What did you think I meant?”

I pinched my lips together, biting back my frustration. “You know what I’m asking.”

“I know.” She knotted her fingers together. “I understand that our magic requires more from me than what I can give right now, but I am trying, whether you believe me or not.”

I hated pushing her like this. Especially because it was my fault we were in this situation. If someone had talked her into leaving the island, I’d never be able to look at them again, let alone work with them on a daily basis. So, I understood why she was still hurt and angry at me for telling Seth to leave. But she had been trying. We’d come a lot farther than I ever could’ve hoped even a week ago, and I needed to give her more credit for that.

I rubbed a hand over the back of my neck. We could still practice using our powers. We didn’t have much of a choice, considering what we were up against. She just wouldn’t be able to get a handle on the side effects. Which would be absolute hell on me. Every time she ground her pussy against me and begged me to fuck her, it got harder and harder to say no. But that wasn’t really what she wanted, it was the magic talking, and I’d be damned if I took her to bed when she wasn’t one hundred percent willing and in her right mind.

“Look, we have to practice.” I gritted my teeth at the thought of gathering my will to stop once her magic inevitably took over her impulses. “If you can’t forgive me for telling Seth what a selfish prick he would’ve been to take you with him when he left, that’s fine. We’ll work around it.”

“Right.” She huffed out a breath. “Like that’s what I’ve been mad about this whole time.”

My brow scrunched in confusion. “Wait. What?”

“Never mind. It doesn’t matter.” She pushed past me and headed toward the empty parking lot. “We’ll practice tomorrow morning before I open the shop. It’ll be fun. I’m really looking forward to getting so horny I try to tear through your clothes, while you once again have to talk me off your dick. Magic is awesome.”

“Hold on.” I grabbed her elbow and spun her around, releasing her when sparks of emerald light shot into the air like fireworks. “If you’re not mad at me for telling Seth to break things off with you, then what the hell have you been pissed about this whole time?”

She turned her head to the side, shutting me out so thoroughly, she might as well have thrown down a physical wall between us. “I’m not discussing this with you. It was a long time ago and it’s over now. Moving on.”

“The fuck if we’re moving on.” I cupped her face, forcing her gaze to meet mine. The temperature dropped from her ice gathering in the air. Sparks of electricity burst in my peripheral vision as I searched her eyes, frantically seeking a clue to whatever I must’ve been missing. “Baby, what did I do? Tell me so I can fix it.”

She sniffed and her eyes filled with tears. I could not have felt like a bigger piece of shit if I tried. I did that to her. The woman I loved more than my own damn life was crying.

Because of me.

“I was there that night at Seth’s. You asked him what he was doing with someone like me because he was meant for bigger things, as if I wasn’t good enough for him or something, and then you told him we hadn’t ever been friends.” She rubbed her nose. “And you didn’t want his sloppy seconds.”
