Chapter Six

Bear

“SO, YOU HAVE TWO PROSPECTS keeping an eye on the girls?” Demon shook his head. “And you wonder why King is still sticking around.”

Hero growled and laid his hand on the table. “Mouse is more than capable of keeping an eye on Reva. She’s not even a target.”

“Whatever, man, that’s your ol’ lady he’s watching.” Demon shrugged.

“And, Troy is watching Luna, who thinks that she is keeping an eye on Greta and Meg.” Hero shrugged. “What she doesn’t know won’t hurt her.”

Hero glanced at Gambler and hitched his chin.

Easy elbowed Pie. “It’s like he’s never met Luna before.”

Pie shook his head. “As soon as she finds out that Dad is keeping an eye on her, she’s going to flip.”

“She’s a prospect,” King interrupted. “If she doesn’t like what Hero did, then she’ll have to bring it to us. I made it clear to her that she was a prospect until she proved she was ready to be a full member. That means she is going to have to learn how to keep her attitude and temper in check.”

“Good luck,” Slider laughed. “She’s going to be a prospect until the day she dies if she has to drop the attitude.”

“Might be a while,” King chuckled.

“Do they ever get to talking about serious things?” I asked. For the past five minutes, the guys had talked about everything but catching Dr. Lu.

“Eventually,” Ransom chuckled. “It may not seem like it, but these guys do seem to get the job done, even if it is in a roundabout way.”

Rigid turned his head and looked at us. “Ransom?” he called. “What is your take on your ol’ lady having her dad keep an eye on her?”

Ransom raised his hands. “I have nothing to say about Luna being a prospect. That is her road to walk.”

“He’s just her ol’ lady,” Pie cracked.

Ransom turned slowly toward Pie and raised his middle finger. “I will arrest your ass for a busted taillight and make sure you don’t see the light of day for a week.”

Pie curled his lip but didn’t argue.

“All right, all right,” King called. “Let’s get this shitshow on the road and find out where this asshole is, yeah?”

Ransom dropped his finger but mumbled under his breath for Pie to watch his back.

“Isn’t he gonna be like your brother-in-law?” I whispered.

Ransom grunted. “Don’t fucking remind me. I’m only here trying to work with these guys because of Luna.” He stood and wiped his hands on his pants. “As much as I would love to lock you guys in a room so that you’ll let me do my job, I know that is not going to happen.” Ransom moved next to King and motioned to me.

“Uh, I don’t care what you guys do. I’m gonna just do what I need to.” I mean, I didn’t have a problem with any of these guys, as long as they stayed out of my way.

“The same way you were doing what you needed to do and then Greta almost got killed?” Gambler growled.

Ah, Greta’s dad. He might pose a little bit of a problem for me. He had the papa bear routine down pat.

“Not much I could have done about that, though I was the one to rescue her from the asshole, so I guess I ended up doing my job in the end.”

“Minus the fact she has a few busted ribs, right?”

Jesus, Gambler did not like me. At all.

King shook his head at Gambler. “We’re not going to argue about the past. Thankfully, Bear was able to get to Greta before it was too late, and now, we need to focus on grabbing this guy before he manages to get another one of the girls.”

Gambler grunted and kept glaring at me.

Maybe I did have a problem with one of the guys.

“We need to figure out who Conner Lu actually is,” Ransom interrupted. “We combed through every piece of his apartment, but there wasn’t much to find. We are analyzing some DNA to confirm who he is, but at the moment, we don’t have any reason to believe that he isn’t Conner Lu.”

“That’s the thing,” Zig interrupted. “Greta said this guy knew one of us in high school, but the name Conner Lu doesn’t sound familiar to us at all.”

“Not at all. I even went through my fucking yearbooks last night, and there wasn’t one Conner Lu,” Zag agreed.

“Maybe he changed his name since high school?” Rigid suggested. “I’m assuming he didn’t have a good time in high school if he’s coming back to Rockton to kill girls associated with the Devil’s Knights.”

Zig held up his hands. “Maybe that is the case. We need a picture of him or something.”

Ransom nodded. “I’m working on finding any pictures of him. I have a call into the vet clinic to see if they have any. I should hear back from them tomorrow.”

“I’m assuming he didn’t happen to be at his place when you guys busted in,” King guessed.

“Nope.” Ransom leaned against the table. “It looked like he hadn’t been there for at least a couple of weeks. He has to have somewhere else he is staying. All of the food in his fridge was expired by at least two weeks.”

“Probably since he fucked up with taking Luna,” I volunteered. “He had to assume that we were close to catching up with him.”

“Even though we fucking weren’t,” Slider chuckled. “The idiot would still be hiding in plain sight if he hadn’t tried to kill Greta.”

That was the damn truth. I had been chasing down a few leads before Greta had been attacked, and none of them were leading me to Dr. Lu. “So, let’s start figuring out where any abandoned house and buildings are within a fifty-mile radius.”

King turned toward me. “That’s a pretty big area to cover.”

I shrugged. “I’ve searched for men in ten thousand acre state parks. You start closest to the crime scene and work your way out. We check Rockton and Preston first. Then, we move further out. He has to be staying somewhat close to Rockton. If he moves too far away from the Devil’s Knights, then he won’t be able to keep tabs on the girls. He’s been successful six times, and the last two times, he failed. He’s gotta be pissed and wanting redemption.”

“So, you’re saying he’s going to come after one of the girls again,” Hero muttered.

Ransom nodded. “Bear is right. And the fact of the matter is, he’s going to come for either Luna or Greta.”

“You mean the two women who have the biggest attitudes, and we’re going to have to pretty much sit on to make sure they stay safe?” Pie threw up his hands in the air. “We’re fucked.”

“That’s why we need to find this asshole before Greta and Luna have a chance to get up to their antics.” King tapped his fingers on the table. He closed his eyes and sighed. “Meg is at the house today.”

“Oh, God,” Rigid laughed. “I’d be surprised as fuck if they are even at the house anymore. They more than likely gave Troy the slip and are already knocking on Dr. Lu’s hideout.”

“Greta told me she was just laying low today. She’s still pretty banged up.” I didn’t know Greta inside and out, but I believed her when she had told me that she didn’t have any plans for the day. Now, I knew she wouldn’t straight out tell me that she was going to go looking for this psycho, but I hadn’t given her any reason to lie to me.

All eyes turned to me.
