Chapter Ten

Greta

“WHY CAN’T WE BUY LUNCHABLES?” I asked.

“Because that is plastic cheese and stale crackers,” Meg insisted. “And you are not going to give that mountain of a man a Lunchable to fuel him while he chases down Dr. Douche.”

I grabbed another Lunchable. “I’ll send him with two. That should fuel him.”

Luna snickered, and Cyn ducked her head. “Is this where you have a mental breakdown?” she whispered to Meg.

“I don’t see a problem with Lunchables,” Marley muttered. “I mean, it has all of the food groups.”

Meg pointed at Marley. “And that is the reason why you can’t feed that man a Lunchable. Marley thinks it’s a good idea.”

“Meg ain’t wrong,” Luna whispered.

“I’ve got the milk. I got you two gallons since you have Bear staying with you.” Mom hoisted two gallons of milk and smiled wide.

“Bear doesn’t like milk.” I reached into the cart and grabbed them back. “And we’re not getting the Lunchables. But since you won’t let me buy them, you’re going to have to make me one of those shark-coochie boards I keep seeing all over the internet.”

Meg signed the cross over her chest and closed her eyes. “God, give me strength with these girls.”

“What kind of person doesn’t like milk?” Mom gasped. “The next thing you are going to say is he doesn’t like cheese.”

“Shark-coochie?” Cyn asked. “Maybe you should just stick to the Lunchables if you’re gonna feed him shark vagina instead. I’ve heard of eating bull testicles, but shark vagina is a new one.”

“Charcuterie,” Meg shouted. “You want a charcuterie board, not a shark-coochie.”

“Same thing,” I muttered.

“Oh,” Cyn gasped. “I’ve seen them on the Ticky Tock. They look delicious.”

“An idiot could make one,” Meg muttered. “There’s really no baking or cooking to do.”

“Sounds like something Marley should try,” Cyn laughed.

“I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that,” Marley sang. “I know I suck at cooking, but at least I keep trying.”

“Meanwhile, we’re all praying she would just stop,” Luna whispered.

“I heard that, too,” Marley hissed.

“Let’s get everything for shark-coochie, and I can make that for dinner tonight. That way, you guys don’t need to stick around.”

Luna bumped her hip into me. “Is that your way of trying to get some time alone with Bear?”

“If you’re trying to get some time alone with Bear, then you’re going to need something more impressive than a charcuterie board. I’ll make you something that you’ll just need to heat up.” Meg grabbed the cart and turned it around.

“No. I don’t want something more impressive, Meg. I just want something simple, and I’m not trying to spend some time alone with Bear. I mean, I would like that, but I honestly just want some time to myself.”

Meg stopped. “Are we being too much?”

“I told everyone that we all didn’t need to come over this morning,” Cyn scolded.

“Are you okay?” Mom whispered. She put her arm around my shoulder and pulled me in for a hug. “Do you need to sit down?”

Dear, God. “I’m fine, Mom. I just thought it would be nice to have a quiet evening since we’re hanging out all day. I don’t think Bear is used to all the craziness that comes with being around the club.”

I was used to it, and sometimes, it was too much for me.

“Ransom is the same way,” Luna pointed out. “He always asks me how I can even think when we’re all together.”

“Nonsense,” Meg tsked. “It’s not that bad.”

“For us, it’s not,” Cyn laughed. “But you know if the guys of the club think we’re all crazy when we’re together.”

“Fine,” Meg grumbled. “Maybe we’re a lot when we’re all together, but that isn’t a bad thing. We’ll get you everything you need for a charcuterie board, and you can have a peaceful night with your crackers and cheese.” Meg pushed the cart down the cracker aisle with Cyn, Marley, and Gwen following her.

“She’s mad at me.”

“Nonsense,” Luna laughed. “She’s actually furious.”

“I should have just kept my mouth shut,” I muttered.

“No, you shouldn’t have,” Luna insisted. “It’s about damn time you started speaking up, Greta. Sure, you’re loud and crazy, but that’s always about things that don’t really matter. I know you’ve got a lot more going on inside that head of yours.”

“Nah, there really isn’t that much more going on. I just need a little quiet time now and again.”

“And us barging in on you for the past four days isn’t really giving you that quiet time.”

I leaned toward her and rested my head on her shoulder. “But I still love you.”

“And I love you, too, Gertie.” She looped her arm over my shoulder. “Now, let’s go get some stuff for your shark-coochie board so you can have a quiet night with the lumberjack.”

“It’s charcuterie!” Meg shouted.

“Never gonna call it the right name,” I muttered.

Luna laughed and pulled me down the aisle. “Kind of like she can’t seem to remember Bear’s name?”

“Exactly,” I agreed.

I was going to get my quiet evening with Bear. Shark-coochie board and all.
